Anambra Police Detain Suspected Financier Behind Urum Attack

On February 5, 2026, the Anambra State Police Command took custody of 52-year-old Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, handed over by personnel from the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army Cantonment in Onitsha. This arrest is linked to an ongoing probe into a violent incident in Urum involving conspiracy, attempted abduction, severe gunshot wounds, and homicide.

Details of the Alleged Conspiracy and Attack

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, Onyenwe is accused of collaborating with Felix Godwin and other unidentified individuals who remain at large. The group allegedly orchestrated an armed ambush targeting innocent civilians traveling along a road in Urum.

“During questioning, Onyenwe admitted that Felix Godwin transferred ₦500,000 via bank transaction to hire four gunmen from Ayamelum Local Government Area. Additionally, an individual named Emeka from Urum reportedly led the assault. Onyenwe also revealed that Felix provided ₦350,000 to procure four packets of ammunition used in the attack. The ambush resulted in six victims suffering critical gunshot injuries,” Ikenga stated.

Ongoing Investigations and Manhunt

Onyenwe remains in police custody for further interrogation as authorities deepen their investigation. The Anambra State Police have escalated their efforts to track down and arrest the remaining suspects involved in this violent episode.

Context and Broader Security Concerns

This incident highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of Anambra State, where armed groups occasionally disrupt peace and endanger civilians. Recent statistics from the Nigerian Security Tracker indicate a 15% increase in violent attacks in the southeastern region over the past year, underscoring the urgency for coordinated security responses.

Similar cases in neighboring states have prompted the deployment of joint military-police task forces to curb such violent activities. Community engagement and intelligence sharing remain critical components in preventing future attacks and ensuring public safety.
