Kano Police Seize Explosives and Narcotics in Coordinated Raids
The Kano State Police Command has successfully intercepted large quantities of suspected explosives and illegal drugs during two distinct operations, marking a significant stride in the region’s security efforts.
Details of the Explosives Interception
On January 13, 2026, officers from the Anti-Daba Unit, acting on intelligence-led patrols, stopped a commercial tricycle rider at Sani Mainagge Quarters in Gwale Local Government Area. The rider was found transporting three bags containing suspicious heavy materials.
Specialists from the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit examined the contents and uncovered 3,700 electric detonators concealed within the bags.
The tricycle operator, identified as Ibrahim Garba, also known as “Manyan Baki,” aged 49 and originally from Zamfara State, was apprehended. He admitted to facilitating the transfer of these explosive devices from Nasarawa State to other destinations. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the network behind this trafficking.
Drug Bust at Tudun Bojuwa Residence
In a separate operation, officers from the Rijiyar Lemo Police Division executed a search warrant at a home in Tudun Bojuwa Quarters, Fagge LGA. The search yielded two large sacks containing illicit substances.
Further analysis by the EOD-CBRN team revealed one sack contained six rolls of detonating cords, while the other held 20 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa and 220 sachets of tablets believed to be Exol, a controlled substance. Authorities continue to investigate the source and intended distribution of these drugs.
Command’s Commitment to Enhanced Security
According to CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s spokesperson, these operations align with the directives of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, emphasizing improved intelligence gathering and proactive policing strategies.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, praised the officers involved for their dedication and urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities or items. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Kano State Police Command through the emergency hotlines: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.
He also cautioned the public against handling any suspicious objects, advising them to maintain a safe distance and immediately notify law enforcement.
Context and Importance of These Operations
These seizures come amid rising concerns over the trafficking of explosives and narcotics in Northern Nigeria, which pose significant threats to public safety and national security. According to recent reports, Nigeria has seen a 15% increase in the interception of illegal arms and drugs in the past year, underscoring the critical role of intelligence-led policing.
Similar operations in neighboring states have led to the disruption of several criminal networks, highlighting the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in combating organized crime.
