Osun PDP Faction Calls for Urgent National Intervention Amid Rising Internal Conflicts
The Osun Patriotic Front, a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, has appealed to the party’s national executives to step in promptly to address escalating tensions that threaten the party’s cohesion ahead of the upcoming primary elections.
Threats Targeting Primary Venue Operators Raise Alarm
In an official communiqué signed by Chief Saheed Ayodele, Chairman of the group, it was revealed that individuals allegedly affiliated with the party have issued numerous threats against those managing the designated location for the PDP’s primaries. Ayodele characterized these intimidations as a deliberate effort to undermine the electoral process.
Internal Leadership’s Role in Deepening Party Divisions
The faction further criticized the state-level leadership for adopting what it described as an “anti-party stance,” which has exacerbated the already fragile situation. Ayodele specifically accused the state chairman and the governor of demonstrating a lack of dedication to the party’s advancement, highlighting their apparent reluctance to back the PDP’s candidate for the forthcoming 2026 elections.
“For several months, the Governor has been contemplating defecting from the party, and these undermining actions amount to a betrayal of our collective goals,” the statement asserted.
Allegations of Intimidation by Governor and Allies
Intelligence reports cited by the Osun Patriotic Front suggest that the governor and his supporters have threatened violence against party members intending to participate in the primaries scheduled for December 2. The group condemned these threats and called on those responsible to cease harassing the venue operators, emphasizing that these individuals are simply businesspeople conducting legitimate activities.
Commitment to Conducting Primaries Despite Challenges
Despite the prevailing unrest, the Osun Patriotic Front reaffirmed its determination to proceed with the primaries as planned. The group assured party members and supporters that the PDP will present a strong candidate in the 2026 elections, urging all eligible members to participate actively and vote without intimidation.
With Nigeria’s political landscape becoming increasingly competitive, the Osun PDP’s internal dynamics will be critical in shaping the party’s prospects. Recent data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicates that voter turnout in Osun State has fluctuated significantly in past elections, underscoring the importance of unity and effective mobilization within parties.
Party members are encouraged to remain vigilant and engaged to ensure a transparent and peaceful primary process that reflects the democratic values of the PDP.
