The Lagos State government, through its traffic agency, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), just released a digital system to manage traffic violations, parking and traffic laws.
The new system now takes the digital records and footprints of road users offenses and stores them in a secure database. Motorists will get an SMS notification whenever they’ve been profiled for a traffic offense.
The system is built to reduce friction between motorists and law enforcement officers. Motorists have had a series of complaints against traffic enforcement officers in the past. The system will also aid in the reduction of congestion along busy roads, as there won’t be a need for officers to engage with motorists, which is often a source of road traffic.
Users can also log on to the TMS website (http://tms.lagosstate.gov.ng/) to check their status and know if they have been flagged for any road offenses. Any motorist that has been flagged would have to pay their fines before they’re issued a new vehicle license.
See the tweets from Segun Awosanya (Segalink) for explainers on how the system works.
