Amnesty International Deepen calls for release of Abducted School Children in Oyo

Amnesty International has sent a sharp, emotional plea directly to President Bola Tinubu, demanding immediate and aggressive government intervention to rescue schoolchildren currently held captive by bandits and terrorists across Nigeria.

Coinciding with the International Day of the African Child, the human rights organization highlighted a heartbreaking reality: classrooms from Kwara and Kogi to Borno and Oyo states are increasingly defined by empty chairs.

These desks belong to children who should be learning and playing, but are instead living through the nightmare of captivity.

The Systemic Failure to Protect Education

Amnesty International emphasized that school abductions have mutated from isolated incidents into a systemic threat to the nation’s future. The group noted that the persistent targeting of educational institutions proves that the current security measures are simply not enough to keep pupils safe.

“From Kwara to Kogi, Borno, Oyo states and across the country, are empty chairs where children should be learning, playing, and dreaming about their future, not living in fear or captivity.”
When schools become hotspots for kidnappings, it doesn’t just harm the immediate victims—it creates a wave of terror that forces parents to keep their children at home, systematically dismantling the right to education in vulnerable communities.

A Direct Call to the Presidency

The human rights watchdog directly challenged the presidency to move past rhetoric and deliver actionable results. They outlined a clear three-pronged approach necessary to address the crisis:

Swift Rescue Operations: Deploying targeted intelligence and security resources to locate and safely bring home every single child currently held in forest camps.

Fortifying Vulnerable Schools: Upgrading physical security measures and establishing rapid-response protocols for learning institutions in high-risk zones.

Community-Led Protection: Partnering with local communities to create early-warning systems that can detect and prevent attacks before armed groups reach school gates.
