The Uruguayan Football Association has named legendary former striker Diego Forlán as the interim head coach of the national team following the resignation of Marcelo Bielsa after the country’s disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Forlán, one of Uruguay’s greatest football icons, takes charge during a difficult period for La Celeste as the federation begins rebuilding after an underwhelming World Cup campaign. The former forward is expected to oversee the senior national team while also working with the country’s Under-20 side.
Marcelo Bielsa stepped down after Uruguay failed to progress beyond the group stage, bringing an end to his tenure with the national team. The federation believes Forlán’s experience, leadership, and deep understanding of Uruguayan football make him the right figure to guide the transition.
Forlán enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing clubs such as Manchester United, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan. He also starred for Uruguay, winning the Golden Ball as the best player at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and helping his country lift the 2011 Copa América title.
Although his coaching experience is relatively limited, the Uruguayan legend now has the opportunity to lead his national team as it prepares for future international competitions. His interim appointment will be closely monitored before a decision is made on the long-term managerial position.
