Fresh attacks on communities in Benue and Plateau states have claimed the lives of at least 27 people, further worsening security concerns in Nigeria’s North-Central region. The deadly assaults, believed to have been carried out by suspected armed groups, have sparked renewed calls for stronger government intervention to protect vulnerable communities.
In Benue State, at least 18 people were reportedly killed during coordinated attacks on Akpachi village in Ugboju and the Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area. Witnesses said the attackers invaded the communities in the early hours, leaving several residents dead and many others injured. The violence triggered protests by angry youths, who demanded immediate action from security agencies.
In Plateau State, nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby, lost their lives after gunmen attacked Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area. The incident has left residents devastated and displaced, with community leaders calling for increased security presence to prevent further attacks.
Reacting to the Benue killings, the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode, condemned the attacks and described the murder of innocent residents as unacceptable. He assured citizens that the government would work with security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The latest wave of violence has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity affecting several communities in Benue and Plateau states, with residents urging both federal and state authorities to strengthen security measures and prevent further loss of lives.
