The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has concluded plans to integrate anti-corruption education into the curriculum of Nigerian universities and the Nigerian Law School as part of efforts to promote integrity and accountability among future professionals.

The initiative was announced during a workshop in Kano, where stakeholders in legal education discussed strategies for institutionalising anti-corruption studies within Nigeria’s educational system. According to the ICPC, the move is aimed at tackling corruption through preventive and value-based education rather than relying solely on prosecution and enforcement measures.

Former Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma (SAN), described the initiative as a significant step toward securing the education sector’s support in the fight against corruption. He stressed that introducing anti-corruption values at the foundational stages of legal training would help produce lawyers who understand that combating corruption is both a legal duty and a moral responsibility.

ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), also emphasised that corruption cannot be defeated through arrests and prosecutions alone, insisting that ethical values and integrity must be cultivated early among students and future legal practitioners. He noted that legal education should produce professionals who are not only intellectually competent but also committed to justice, transparency and accountability.

The workshop considered possible approaches for implementing the initiative, including introducing anti-corruption studies as a stand-alone course or integrating anti-corruption themes into existing law courses. Participants expressed optimism that the proposed curriculum would help nurture a new generation of lawyers and professionals dedicated to ethical conduct and good governance in Nigeria.
