Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that his government is engaged in active negotiations with a prospective investor to revive the long-dormant Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

Speaking on the development, President Mahama said discussions are progressing as part of broader efforts to restore operations at the factory and transform it into a major contributor to Ghana’s industrial and agricultural sectors. He expressed optimism that the partnership would help bring the facility back to life and create employment opportunities for residents.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, which was originally established to boost local sugar production and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported sugar, has faced years of operational challenges, including technical deficiencies, financial difficulties and shortages of raw materials.

The government has identified the revival of the factory as a key economic priority and has taken steps to attract strategic investors and secure sustainable sugarcane supplies for production. Authorities have also indicated plans to address the factory’s accumulated debts and infrastructure challenges.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to industrialisation and agricultural development, stressing that reviving the Komenda Sugar Factory would stimulate economic activity in the Central Region and strengthen Ghana’s manufacturing base.

The announcement has renewed hopes among stakeholders and residents who believe the factory’s reopening could generate jobs, support local farmers and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.
