Nigeria has recorded its strongest performance yet in global higher education rankings, with 24 universities securing spots in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings. The achievement makes Nigeria the most represented country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the latest rankings, the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institutions, both earning places among the world’s top 1,000 universities. Bayero University Kano also featured prominently among the country’s leading institutions.

The 2026 rankings represent an improvement from previous editions, with the number of Nigerian universities recognised globally increasing from 21 to 24. Education stakeholders have described the development as evidence of growing academic quality, improved research output and increased global visibility of Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The ranked institutions include federal, state and private universities from across the country, with federal universities accounting for the majority of the entries. Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa described the achievement as a positive outcome of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Analysts say the increased representation in the rankings is expected to boost the international reputation of Nigerian universities, attract greater academic collaborations and encourage further investments in research and innovation. The achievement also highlights the growing competitiveness of Nigerian institutions on the global stage and underscores the need to sustain reforms that enhance teaching, learning and research excellence.
