Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up once again as former Vice President and prominent opposition leader, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has launched a scathing critique against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Atiku is demanding an immediate and thorough legislative probe into the 2026 Appropriation Act following alarming reports of financial discrepancies.

The call for an investigation comes on the heels of revelations indicating that more than N210 billion has been allocated to duplicated and overlapping projects within the national budget.

A Pattern of Fiscal Mismanagement?

In a strongly-worded statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku characterized the current administration as “caretakers of waste.” According to the statement, the multi-billion naira budget anomalies are not isolated incidents but rather part of a deeply concerning and continuous pattern of opaque budgeting practices that undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s public finance architecture.

Atiku pointed out that while ordinary citizens are being asked to tighten their belts and endure severe economic reforms, the government appears to be misallocating critical public resources.
