The Kogi State Government has announced a ban on night-time operations by commercial motorcyclists and certain categories of motorists as part of intensified efforts to tackle insecurity across the state.
The decision, according to the government, follows growing concerns over the use of motorcycles and vehicles by criminal elements involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, and other unlawful activities. Authorities believe that restricting movement during late-night hours will strengthen surveillance efforts and limit opportunities for criminals to operate undetected.
In a statement outlining the new measures, the government stressed that the safety of residents remains a top priority. It noted that security agencies had observed a pattern in which offenders exploit the cover of darkness to carry out attacks and evade arrest.
The restriction is expected to affect commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as okada riders, as well as motorists operating within designated areas and hours specified by the authorities. The government urged members of the public to cooperate with security operatives and comply fully with the directive in the interest of peace and public safety.
Officials also warned that anyone found violating the order would face sanctions in accordance with the law. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the restrictions while ensuring that legitimate emergency services are not hindered.
The latest measure comes amid renewed efforts by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration to strengthen security architecture in Kogi State. The government recently announced the acquisition of armoured vehicles and additional logistics support for security personnel to improve their operational capacity.
While acknowledging that the restrictions may pose temporary inconveniences to some residents, the state government maintained that the policy is necessary to safeguard lives and property. It appealed for understanding and collective support from citizens in the fight against insecurity.
As authorities continue to review the security situation, residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate agencies.
