Oyo State Cracks Down on Unauthorized Waste Collection in Ibadan

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in Oyo State has initiated a rigorous enforcement campaign targeting residential and commercial properties within Ibadan for engaging unlicensed waste collectors. These entities were found to be in violation of environmental laws by employing illegal waste disposal services and neglecting registration with authorized Private Sector Participants (PSP) waste management operators.

Government’s Commitment to a Cleaner, Healthier Environment

During a recent inspection tour across key areas of Ibadan, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, emphasized that this crackdown aligns with Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde‘s directive to foster a sanitary, safe, and investment-friendly environment throughout Oyo State.

“Our objective is straightforward: maintain cleanliness, safeguard public health, boost economic productivity, and cultivate an environment conducive to sustainable development. This enforcement action is a direct reflection of that mission,” Hon. Aderinto stated.

Preserving Oyo’s Reputation as a Model State

Hon. Aderinto expressed disappointment that Oyo State, often hailed as the Pacesetter State, risks losing its esteemed status due to non-compliance with environmental standards. He stressed the importance of lawful behavior and environmental stewardship to prevent the state from being linked with pollution and disorder.

Inspection Findings and Areas of Concern

The inspection team surveyed neighborhoods including Bodija, Sango, Eleyele, and Ologuneru, uncovering numerous violations such as absence of proper waste bins, refusal to collaborate with accredited PSP waste collectors, and outright lack of registration with any authorized waste management service.

Alarmingly, some property owners were found to be complicit with illegal waste collectors who dispose refuse indiscriminately in open spaces rather than designated landfill sites, posing significant environmental and health hazards.

Addressing the Threat of Illegal Waste Disposal

“These unauthorized collectors offer substandard services at low costs, dumping waste in unauthorized locations, which exacerbates environmental degradation and public health risks. Such practices will no longer be tolerated,” the Commissioner warned. “Any action that damages Oyo State’s image or undermines government efforts will be met with firm resistance.”

Government’s Stance and Call to Action

Hon. Aderinto urged illegal waste collectors to cease their operations immediately, affirming that the government will enforce strict penalties against offenders. He also encouraged residents and facility managers experiencing difficulties with PSP operators to report their concerns to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources or the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority for swift resolution.

In a decisive move, some PSP operators were terminated on the spot for collaborating with violators of waste management regulations, signaling the administration’s zero-tolerance policy.

Ensuring Compliance and Public Cooperation

“We invite anyone facing challenges related to waste collection or regulatory compliance to approach the Ministry. We are committed to providing guidance and taking necessary enforcement actions. Adherence to environmental laws is non-negotiable in Oyo State,” concluded Hon. Aderinto.
