Governor Seyi Makinde‘s Transformative Impact on Ibadan’s Urban Landscape
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, former President of Nigeria, has commended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his visionary efforts in enhancing the livability of Ibadan, the state capital. Obasanjo highlighted the governor’s commitment to improving residents’ quality of life through strategic infrastructure projects aimed at streamlining transportation and fostering urban comfort.
Inauguration of the Ibadan Central Bus Terminal: A Milestone in Urban Mobility
During the commissioning ceremony held at the Ibadan Central Bus Terminal on Iwo Road, Obasanjo praised the newly completed dual mega bus stations. These facilities boast modern amenities including spacious waiting lounges, ticketing counters, eateries, public restrooms, ample parking, power generation units, water reservoirs, as well as elevators and escalators, setting a new standard for public transport hubs in the region.
Addressing Transportation Challenges Amidst Urban Growth
Governor Makinde acknowledged the ongoing concerns surrounding the 110km Ibadan Circular Road project, assuring that consultations with legitimate property owners affected by the development will continue. He emphasized the critical importance of this infrastructure, describing it as a foundational economic artery that will underpin Oyo State’s growth trajectory in the coming decades.
Strategic Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Regional Development
Obasanjo underscored the significance of Makinde’s people-focused projects, particularly the bus terminals, which are poised to alleviate traffic congestion in Ibadan-Nigeria’s third most populous city and the largest by landmass. He noted that the terminals at Ojoo, Challenge, and Iwo Road will facilitate smoother intra-city travel, benefiting not only Ibadan but the broader South-West region, given the city’s historical and cultural prominence as the former capital of the Western Region and Yorubaland.
“Governor Makinde has excelled in making Ibadan a more liveable city, enhancing comfort for all residents,” Obasanjo remarked. “Given Ibadan’s vast geographical spread, efficient transportation infrastructure is essential to connect its people and markets effectively.”
Leadership Rooted in Professionalism and Vision
Obasanjo also highlighted Makinde’s engineering background as a key factor in his pragmatic approach to governance. “As a professional engineer, he understands how to solve complex problems, and now he is applying those skills to political leadership,” he said. The former president encouraged Makinde to remain steadfast despite criticism, reminding him that public leaders often face opposition before their achievements are recognized.
Governor Makinde’s Commitment to Sustainable Urban Development
Governor Makinde detailed his administration’s completion of four state-of-the-art bus terminals-located at Challenge, Ojoo, New Ife Road, and Iwo Road-designed to facilitate seamless movement within Ibadan. He stressed that these projects reflect a broader vision to modernize Oyo State’s infrastructure without succumbing to political distractions.
Highlighting additional efforts, Makinde mentioned the dual carriageway from Iwo Road to Adegbayi, constructed to ease traffic flow, with plans underway to extend this road to the Oyo State boundary at Asejire. These initiatives aim to reduce transportation bottlenecks and improve daily commutes for residents.
Transforming Urban Spaces with Inclusive Planning
Reflecting on the site of the new bus terminal, Makinde recounted the sensitive demolition of a mosque that once stood there, assuring that a modern mosque was constructed to replace it. This gesture exemplifies his administration’s commitment to balancing development with respect for community sentiments.
“Our goal is to restore dignity to urban movement, beautify our cities, and inspire hope through every project,” Makinde affirmed. “We are building a modern Oyo State, one initiative at a time.”
The 110km Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road: A Vision for Economic Expansion
Addressing public concerns about the Circular Road project, Governor Makinde clarified that it transcends mere road construction. It is envisioned as a dynamic economic corridor designed to attract industries, logistics centers, and residential estates, thereby catalyzing sustainable growth over the next 20 years.
“This corridor is a strategic investment for future generations, ensuring orderly urban expansion and preventing chaotic development,” he explained. Makinde also committed to engaging with the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) and local traditional leaders to address property-related issues amicably.
Official Endorsements and Community Engagement
Oyo State Commissioner for Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, described the new bus terminals as a landmark achievement that embodies purposeful governance. He emphasized that the design adheres to international standards, prioritizing safety, sustainability, and user comfort, and called on the public to take collective responsibility for maintaining the facilities.
The commissioning event attracted a distinguished gathering, including Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, former Deputy Governor Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Adebo Ogundoyin, Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima, former Minister of Trade Chief Mrs. Onikepo Akande, and numerous traditional rulers and political leaders, reflecting broad support for the state’s developmental agenda.
