Soludo’s win proves Nigeria not sliding into one-party rule — APC chieftain Okechukwu

Osita Okechukwu on Anambra Election: A Testament to Nigeria’s Multiparty Democracy

Osita Okechukwu, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has extended his congratulations to Professor Charles Soludo, the incumbent Governor of Anambra State and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), following his decisive re-election. Okechukwu emphasized that Soludo’s victory underscores the resilience of Nigeria’s multiparty system, dispelling fears that the country is drifting toward a one-party dominance.

Election Outcome Challenges One-Party State Narrative

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Okechukwu praised President Bola Tinubu for fostering an equitable electoral environment, which he believes was instrumental in ensuring a transparent contest. “The results from the Anambra governorship election clearly demonstrate that Nigeria is not on the path to becoming a one-party state,” he remarked. This statement counters widespread speculation that the APC, under President Tinubu’s leadership, might manipulate electoral processes to consolidate power.

Defections Reflect Political Dynamics, Not Monopoly

Recent mass defections from opposition parties to the APC had raised alarms about the potential erosion of Nigeria’s democratic diversity. However, Okechukwu dismissed these concerns, attributing the shifts to the APC’s increasing appeal and the tangible progress achieved under President Tinubu’s administration in less than three years. He pointed out that the opposition’s internal missteps, particularly the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) breach of zoning and rotation agreements, have contributed significantly to these political realignments.

“The defections are less about coercion and more about confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and the APC’s vision for Nigeria,” Okechukwu explained. He further highlighted that Tinubu’s administration is committed to upholding democratic principles, ensuring that no single party monopolizes political power, and that citizens retain the freedom to choose among diverse political platforms.

Historical Context and Political Pluralism

Addressing claims that Nigeria is effectively a one-party state, Okechukwu urged critics to consider the country’s political history. He recalled similar concerns voiced in 2004, which were later disproven by the emergence of significant political figures such as Muhammadu Buhari, who successfully challenged attempts at extending presidential terms, and Peter Obi, whose 2023 presidential campaign galvanized a new wave of political engagement through the Obedient Movement.

“Nigeria’s political landscape has always been dynamic,” Okechukwu stated. “The fear of a one-party state is unfounded; what matters most is effective governance, which Governor Soludo has exemplified.”

Why Did APC Lose in Anambra?

Okechukwu posed a critical question: if the APC truly intended to establish a one-party regime, why did it lose the Anambra governorship election? He suggested that the party’s loss is evidence of a functioning democracy where electoral outcomes are not predetermined. Quoting President Tinubu, he reiterated, “Nigeria is not a one-party state but is governed by one party making a difference.” This distinction, he argued, reflects the APC’s commitment to progress while respecting political competition.

Political Defections: A Recurring Phenomenon

Highlighting the cyclical nature of Nigerian politics, Okechukwu noted that party-switching is not a new phenomenon. During the PDP’s tenure, some leaders confidently predicted decades of uninterrupted rule. It was only through the combined efforts of President Tinubu and the late President Buhari that the opposition was galvanized to restore democratic balance by ousting a regime plagued by corruption and mismanagement.

“Now, as the APC strives to rebuild the nation, detractors whose parties are fragmented attempt to mislead the public by alleging a push toward a one-party state. Soludo’s electoral success decisively refutes these claims,” he added.

Calls for Unity and Inclusive Governance

While congratulating Governor Soludo on his re-election, Okechukwu urged him to embrace a spirit of inclusiveness, encouraging collaboration with all stakeholders, including political adversaries, to foster unity and effective governance in Anambra State. He also commended President Tinubu for ensuring a free and fair electoral process, describing it as a cornerstone of liberal democracy.
