Goodluck Jonathan returns to Mali to facilitate peace as Military sets to return power

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been on a peace trip to Mali as a mediator for the ECOWAS to bring a solution to the political crisis in the country after the ouster of president Ibrahim Keita.

OYOGist.com recalls that Goodluck Jonathan has on multiple occasions led teams to broker peace between President Ibrahim Keita and opposition leaders in the Western African country, before the military took over.

On Wednesday, the 23rd of September, Goodluck Jonathan after taking a step back given the deterioriation in the political crisis in Mali which led to the ouster of the President by the Military has now resumed his mediation.

Sharing the update on his social, Goodluck Jonathan revealed that he and his team are back in the country to resume talks as the military is now set to return to civilian administration.

“We returned to Bamako this afternoon to continue consultations with key stakeholders as Malian authorities begin the implementation of their plans for the restoration of a civilian administration,” the Former Nigerian President shared.

“The Ecowas_Cedeao mediation team expects to have fruitful engagements that would bring clarity on the mechanisms for a transition government that is about to be inaugurated,” Goodluck Jonathan further said.

On the 18th of August 2020, a faction of the Malian Armed Forces overthrew the Ibrahim Keita led civilian government in a shock coup.
