A massive explosion has rocked the city of Beirut, Lebanon on Monday, the 4th of August 2020, days ahead of the verdict in a politically sensitive murder trial, OYOGist.com reports.
The explosion, which shattered windows and blew off roofs has killed at least 27 people and injured more than 3,000 according to sources.
The explosion has added to tensions of division that have arisen due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. It comes some days ahead of Friday’s verdict in the trial of the 2005 murder of the country’s ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Some accounts said the source of the blast was a nitrate storage. Another account said windows of buildings from as far away as 15 miles were shattered.
Latest reports revealed that the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Hassan Diab has reacted to the explosion in a national address on Monday.
