OYOGist.com has learned that the Cross River State Commissioner for Health and Chairman COVID-19 Response Team, Dr Betta Edu have accused the NCDC and Federal Government of mounting so much pressure on the state and questioning the free status of the state as regards COVID-19. This was made known during a press briefing on Friday May 29, 2020 at the State Ministry of Health Complex, Calabar, the State capital.
The State Commissioner have expressed displeasure on the continuous pressure from the Nigerian Medical Association, NCDC and the Federal government for not having any case of COVID-19 in the state.
Dr Betta Edu stressed that the state had started preparation early enough even before Africa had the first case of the virus. The free status of the state did not just happen as a magic, various measures were put in place early enough to tackle and fight the pandemic.

The Cross River State Government had started sensitization and awareness campaign since January, they had shutdown its borders, they had started the distribution of face masks and hand sanitizers because the proactive governor was not ready to take chances.
The Commissioner also mentioned that there are still other sicknesses killing people, Malaria, Diabetes, Cancer, Tuberculosis and many to mention but a few. The presence of COVID-19 have not eliminated other sicknesses and that COVID-19 is not a death sentence, at such it should not be magnified.
“How many people are we going to lose or allow to die before Nigeria stops magnifying COVID-19? We tried as a state and maybe prevention is not enough”. She added.
