Oprah Winfrey donates $10M – N3.7B – to Coronavirus relief

America’s richest black woman and celebrity talk show host, Oprah Winfrey, has pledged to donate ten million US dollars, the equivalent of 3.7 billion Naira, towards the fight against COVID-19, OYOGist.com has learned.

Oprah joined the crop of billionaires to pledge huge sums of money to support the fight against coronavirus by becoming the latest billionaire to pledge their money towards eradicating the disease and supporting millions of people in need at this desperate times.

The media mogul made the announcement on her Instagram account on Thursday, 2nd of April 2020, where she pledged $1 million to Feeding America, World Central Kitchen and a charity supported by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, under a new initiative called America’s Food Fund.

America’s Food Fund is accepting donations on GoFundMe and they have raised over 12 million US dollars so far.

“I’m so excited about what you are doing,” Oprah said during a web video call with chef and activist, José Andrés – the founder of World Central Kitchen and Claire Babineaux-Fontenot – the CEO of Feeding America.

José Andrés said that he’ll make sure America is fed during this crisis and ensure that no one is left behind.

“Let me tell you, we’re gonna be here together to make sure that we feed America in this moment and we’re gonna come out of this crisis stronger than ever, making sure that we don’t leave anybody behind,” José Andrés told Oprah during their interview.

Oprah shared on her Twitter page that she was “struck” by the work the organizations are doing as everyone’s priority is to stay safe at home.

Other billionaires such as Jeff Bezos, who pledged to donate $100 million to Feeding America and Bill Gates who pledged $100 million, part of which will go to the WHO and Kylie Jenner, who also donated $1 million dollars are among America’s richest contributing to support others during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A week ago, America overtook China and Italy to become the world’s epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. As of April 2, 2020, over 200,000 people have been infected in the United States, with close to 4,000 deaths already recorded.

On the 2nd of April, 2020, the number of confirmed global coronavirus cases passed one million, with the figures doubling within just one week.
