As the country struggles to come to terms with the news that the country’s top henchman, Abba Kyari – Buhari’s Chief of Staff and one of the most powerful names within Aso Villa – has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the latest high profile Nigerian to test positive to the virus, Nigerians are debating why he was on that trip in the first place.

The COS was said to have attended a critical Power-related meeting in Germany where he represented Nigeria’s interests in the energy and power sector.

Nigeria, the most populous black nation on earth and the largest economy in Africa, still struggles with stable electricity. The impact of this is felt across all sectors of the country’s economy, with most households relying on harmful alternatives for their sources of electricity, OYOGist.com reports.

A recent bill brought forward by the senate proposes to ban the importation of gasoline generators into the country, and hand prison time to business owners and importers who ship them in.

Nigerians have criticized this move as putting the cart before the horse, reminding the policy makers that if the country enjoys reliable 24/7 electricity, there won’t be a market for generating machines in the country.

On the 24th of March, 2020, the Chief of Staff to the Presider, Abba Kyari tested positive to Covid19, after he was reportedly exposed to the virus while on his trip to Germany.

This report has forced a debate among Nigerians on the Internet – “why was the COS on the trip and where was the minister of power?”

The minister of power, Hon. Sale Mamman, was reported to have accompanied Abba Kyari to the Germany trip.

Abba Kyari was reported to have come in close contact with several top Nigerians since returning from the trip, including the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the President himself.

Abba Kyari and Sale Mamman did not observe the required self-isolation exercise required of people returning into the country from countries with high cases of Coronavirus.

Germany, as of 24th March, 2020, has recorded 27,436 cases.

A Coronavirus test ran on the President returned negative on the 24th of March 2020.
