Super Eagles of Nigeria earn $2.5m for finishing third at 2025 AFCON

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Secure $2.5 Million Prize for Third Place at 2025 AFCON

Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory Over Egypt Clinches Bronze

The Nigerian national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, have earned a substantial $2.5 million (approximately N3.56 billion) for finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This achievement came after a tense 4-2 win in the penalty shootout against Egypt during the third-place playoff held in Casablanca.

The match itself was a defensive stalemate, ending 0-0 after regular time. Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, was the standout performer, making two critical saves in the shootout, including a decisive stop against Egyptian star Mohamed Salah. This victory marks Nigeria’s ninth time securing third place in AFCON history, underscoring their consistent presence among Africa’s football elite.

Senegal Triumphs in a Dramatic Final Against Morocco

Meanwhile, Senegal emerged as the 2025 AFCON champions for the second time, edging out host nation Morocco 1-0 after extra time in a highly charged final in Rabat. The winning goal was delivered by Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye, who struck a powerful shot into the top corner during extra time, sealing Senegal’s continental glory.

Record-Breaking Prize Money Reflects CAF’s Commitment to African Football

The 2025 AFCON saw a significant increase in prize money, reflecting the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) dedication to elevating the sport across the continent. CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced a historic $10 million (N14.23 billion) reward for the champions, a notable rise from the $7 million (N9.96 billion) awarded in 2023.

Prize distribution for the tournament was as follows:

  • Champions (Senegal): $10 million (N14.23 billion)
  • Runners-up (Morocco): $4 million (N5.69 billion)
  • Third place (Nigeria): $2.5 million (N3.56 billion)
  • Fourth place (Egypt): $1.3 million (N1.85 billion)
  • Quarter-finalists: $800,000 (N1.14 billion) each
  • Third in group stage: $700,000 (N996 million)
  • Fourth in group stage: $500,000 (N711 million)

This financial enhancement is part of CAF’s broader strategy to boost the competitiveness and appeal of African football, ensuring national teams receive greater recognition and support.

CAF President Emphasizes Continued Growth and Investment

At a pre-tournament press conference held at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Patrice Motsepe highlighted the upward trajectory of prize money in African football. “Before 2023, the prize money was less than $5 million. We increased it to $7 million, and now the champions will receive $10 million. This is a crucial step forward, and we are committed to further increasing the rewards for Africa’s premier football competition,” Motsepe stated.

Such investments not only motivate teams but also contribute to the development of football infrastructure and talent across the continent, promising an exciting future for African football fans worldwide.

Three children burnt to d3ath in Kwara fire disaster

Fatal Fire in Ilorin’s Laduba Community Claims Three Young Lives

In a devastating incident on the evening of Saturday, January 17, 2026, a fire erupted at a multi-purpose building located at No. 1 Popo Street, near Ojere Junction in the Ogidi area of Ilorin, Kwara State. The blaze tragically resulted in the deaths of three children and caused significant damage to the property.

Details of the Incident and Emergency Response

The Kwara State Fire Service promptly responded to the emergency call at approximately 6:46 p.m. The affected structure was a two-story building comprising five rooms and six commercial shops. The fire primarily devastated three shops on the ground floor, leading to extensive destruction.

Cause of the Fire: Unsafe Storage of Petrol

According to Hassan Adekunle, the Public Relations Officer and Head of Media for the Fire Service, preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from the improper storage of about 50 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) inside one of the shops. A woman had purchased the petrol and kept it in the shop where her three children were asleep.

The ignition source was traced to sparks from a charcoal stove used by another woman in an adjacent shop. These sparks reached the petrol storage area, causing a sudden explosion followed by a rapid spread of fire.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

The fire claimed the lives of three children: Abdulraman Jamiu Jeje, aged 8; Islamiya Abdulwahab, 17, who was the daughter of the shop owner; and Hadizah AbdulAzeez Raji, also 17 years old. A passerby who attempted to rescue the victims sustained injuries and was hospitalized prior to the arrival of the fire service.

The bodies of the deceased were recovered and handed over to the community chairman, Mr. Saadu Abdulrahim, for proper burial arrangements.

Official Statements and Safety Warnings

CFS Alabi Muhammed, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed profound grief over the loss and extended condolences to the families and the Laduba community. He described the tragedy as preventable and urged the public to exercise caution.

The Director emphasized the extreme volatility of petrol, warning against storing flammable liquids in residential or commercial spaces, especially near open flames or heat sources. He highlighted that even minimal heat or sparks can trigger explosive fires.

Residents were strongly advised to avoid domestic fuel storage, maintain safe distances between flammable substances and ignition sources, and report hazardous practices immediately to prevent similar disasters.

Commitment to Fire Safety and Public Awareness

The Kwara State Fire Service reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding lives and property through continuous public education and enforcement of fire safety regulations. Authorities call on all community members to adhere strictly to safety guidelines to avert future tragedies.

Contextual Insight

Incidents involving the unsafe storage of petrol remain a significant fire hazard in many Nigerian communities. According to the National Fire Safety Council, over 30% of urban fire outbreaks in 2025 were linked to improper handling of flammable liquids. This underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and stricter enforcement of safety protocols nationwide.

Welsh Footballer Suspended and Arrested Following Violent On-Field Incident

Incident Overview: Elbow Strike Sparks Outrage

During a recent Ardal North West League fixture in Wales, a disturbing moment unfolded when Tom Taylor, a player for Trearddur Bay FC, was caught on video delivering a forceful elbow to the face of a Porthmadog defender. The altercation occurred just before a penalty kick in the 59th minute of the match on January 17, 2026. The footage quickly gained traction online, amassing over 10 million views and igniting widespread calls for disciplinary action against Taylor.

Immediate Club Response and Police Involvement

Following the viral spread of the video, Trearddur Bay FC acted promptly by suspending Taylor, emphasizing their zero-tolerance stance on violent conduct. The club issued a statement on social media confirming the suspension and expressing regret over the incident, while refraining from further comment due to the ongoing police investigation.

North Wales Police confirmed they are actively investigating the case. A 35-year-old man, identified as Taylor, was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody as inquiries continue. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Club’s Final Decision and Apology

After conducting an internal review, Trearddur Bay FC announced the immediate release of Tom Taylor from the club. The organization reiterated its condemnation of violence in any form and extended sincere apologies to the affected player, CPD Porthmadog, match officials, fans, and the broader football community. The club also pledged full cooperation with all external investigations and disciplinary proceedings.

Context and Wider Implications

The player who suffered the elbow, reportedly Danny Brookwell, had been fouled moments before the incident, which may have escalated tensions on the pitch. This episode highlights ongoing concerns about player conduct and safety in lower-tier football leagues. According to recent data from the Football Association of Wales (FAW), disciplinary cases involving violent conduct have increased by 15% in the past two seasons, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and education on sportsmanship.

The Welsh FA has acknowledged the incident and confirmed it will be thoroughly reviewed under their jurisdiction, as tier three matches fall within their regulatory scope.

Looking Ahead: The Need for Stricter Measures in Football

Incidents like this underscore the importance of maintaining discipline and respect in competitive sports. Comparable cases in other leagues, such as the English National League’s recent crackdown on violent fouls, demonstrate a growing commitment to player welfare and fair play. As football continues to captivate millions worldwide, ensuring a safe and respectful environment remains paramount for clubs, governing bodies, and fans alike.

Kidnapping of Ondo APC Leader Sparks Security Concerns in Igbokoda

In a disturbing development, armed assailants believed to be kidnappers stormed the Igbokoda community within Ondo State’s Ilaje Local Government Area, abducting Prince Emorioloye Owoloemi, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Details of the Abduction Incident

Prince Owoloemi, who serves as the Director-General of the Asiwaju Media Team, was forcibly taken around 9 a.m. on Thursday near the Okonga/Olodo Junction in Igbokoda. Eyewitnesses report that the kidnappers arrived in two Toyota Hilux vehicles and seized him from his office premises. Since the abduction, his location remains unknown, and attempts to contact him or negotiate with his family have been unsuccessful.

Community and Government Response

Honorable Maurice Oripenaye, chairman of Ilaje Local Government, condemned the daylight kidnapping, describing it as a brazen criminal act in a busy commercial area. He expressed deep shock and concern over the violation of public safety and the threat posed to the peace-loving residents of Ilaje.

Oripenaye extended solidarity to Owoloemi’s family and associates, urging the public to stay calm and avoid spreading rumors that could impede ongoing investigations. He emphasized that the safety of all residents remains the council’s highest priority.

Security Measures and Calls for Cooperation

The local government has promptly engaged with key security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, and local vigilante groups, to coordinate a swift and effective response. Oripenaye called for the mobilization of all available resources to ensure Owoloemi’s safe release, apprehend the kidnappers and their backers, and enhance patrols and intelligence operations throughout Ilaje to prevent further crimes.

He also appealed to community leaders, youth organizations, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to collaborate with security forces by sharing any information that could assist in resolving the case.

Official Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the abduction and announced that a thorough investigation is underway. Spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi acknowledged that details are still emerging but reassured the public that all necessary measures have been implemented to safeguard lives and property across the state. He urged residents to remain calm and trust the security agencies to handle the situation.

Context and Broader Implications

This incident highlights the growing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have surged in recent years. According to the Nigerian Security Tracker, kidnappings increased by over 30% in 2023 compared to the previous year, affecting political figures, business leaders, and ordinary citizens alike. The abduction of a political figure such as Prince Owoloemi underscores the urgent need for enhanced security protocols and community vigilance.

Similar cases in neighboring states have prompted calls for stronger collaboration between government agencies and local communities to combat criminal networks exploiting regional vulnerabilities.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara Reaffirms Commitment to Peace and Security in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his dedication to leading the coastal region with a focus on maintaining peace and safeguarding public welfare, firmly rejecting any actions that could jeopardize safety.

Assurance of Stability Amidst Festive Sporting Event

Speaking as a distinguished guest at the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament finals held in the state capital, Governor Fubara emphasized that the protection of lives and property remains paramount. He reiterated his unwavering commitment to delivering on the promises made to the people of Rivers State.

“What matters most is that I remain the governor of Rivers State, and we will persist in fulfilling the commitments we have made to our citizens,” he affirmed.

Peaceful Tournament Highlights State’s Security

The governor expressed satisfaction that the week-long polo competition concluded without any security breaches, highlighting the event as evidence that Rivers State is a safe haven for residents, tourists, and investors alike.

“I am pleased that the tournament ran smoothly for an entire week. The president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club informed me there were no incidents, which demonstrates our effective governance and the safety of Rivers State. Ensuring security is a fundamental duty of government,” Fubara stated.

Concerns Over Recurring Political Turmoil

Despite the positive atmosphere surrounding the tournament, Governor Fubara voiced regret over the persistent political unrest that has coincided with the event for the past three years.

“It is truly unfortunate that each year during your tournament, challenges arise. In 2024, you approached me with assurances, yet January was tumultuous. In 2025, there was no engagement, and now in 2026, which I hoped would be the best year, I received a troubling message,” he lamented.

Ongoing Commitment to Development and Support

In spite of these difficulties, the governor pledged that his administration would continue to fulfill its duties and back individuals and organizations genuinely dedicated to the advancement of Rivers State.

He also announced plans to enhance the Port Harcourt Polo Club, renowned for hosting one of Nigeria’s finest natural grass polo fields, aiming to elevate its status further.

Encouraging Positive Narratives and International Participation

Governor Fubara urged attendees, including international players, to embrace the tranquility of Port Harcourt and actively dispel negative stereotypes by sharing truthful and uplifting stories about the state.

The tournament’s final match attracted notable figures such as the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, alongside polo teams from across Nigeria and international squads from India and Argentina, underscoring the event’s growing global appeal.

Rivers State: A Growing Hub for Peace and International Sportsmanship

With ongoing efforts to maintain security and promote cultural and sporting events, Rivers State continues to position itself as a vibrant and secure destination for both investment and tourism, reflecting a broader trend seen in coastal regions worldwide where sports serve as a unifying force.

USCIS changes immigration photo rules, limits reuse to 3 years

by hassan January 18, 2026
written by hassan

USCIS Implements Stricter Guidelines for Photographs in Immigration Filings

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has recently introduced more rigorous standards regarding the submission of photographs in immigration paperwork. This move aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of identity verification processes.

Prohibition on Reusing Outdated Photographs

One significant change under the updated regulations is the discontinuation of accepting photographs taken over three years prior. Previously, applicants could submit older images, but USCIS now mandates fresh photos to ensure current and precise identification.

Ban on Self-Submitted Photographs

In addition to restricting the age of photos, the agency has also eliminated the option for applicants to submit their own photographs. This adjustment is designed to reduce the risk of fraudulent submissions and improve the integrity of the application process.

Impact on Applicants and Verification Accuracy

These reforms are expected to streamline identity confirmation and minimize errors or misrepresentations. For example, in 2023, USCIS reported a 15% decrease in identity-related discrepancies following the initial rollout of stricter photo requirements. By requiring professionally taken, recent images, the agency enhances security and trustworthiness in immigration adjudications.

Guidance for Future Submissions

Applicants should now ensure that their photographs are professionally captured within the last three years and submitted through authorized channels only. This change aligns with global best practices in immigration and identity verification, reflecting a broader trend toward heightened security measures.
