Nigeria’s US crude oil imports from the USA rise to 42m barrels in 10 months

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Significant Growth in Nigeria’s Crude Oil Imports from the US in 2025

Nigeria’s crude oil imports from the United States have surged dramatically, exceeding 42 million barrels during the first ten months of 2025. This remarkable increase, representing a 167% rise compared to the same period in 2024, is primarily fueled by escalating demand from expanding refinery operations within the country.

Import Trends and Monthly Breakdown

According to the latest figures from the US Energy Information Administration, Nigeria imported 42.13 million barrels of crude oil from the US between January and October 2025, a sharp jump from 15.79 million barrels in the corresponding months of 2024. Notably, imports were absent in January 2025 but resumed in February with 3.11 million barrels, slightly below the 3.61 million barrels imported in February 2024. The volume then climbed steadily, reaching 5.25 million barrels in March 2025, a significant increase from 1.83 million barrels the previous year.

The import figures continued to rise, with May 2025 seeing 3.79 million barrels-1.71 million barrels more than May 2024. June marked a peak with 9.16 million barrels, followed by a slight dip to 4.17 million barrels in July, still surpassing the previous year’s levels. August recorded 6.24 million barrels, while September and October maintained steady imports of 4.19 million barrels each.

Driving Forces Behind the Import Surge

Industry analysts attribute this upward trend largely to the growing crude oil requirements of Nigeria’s private refineries, especially the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. This facility has increasingly favored US light sweet crude due to its compatibility with sophisticated refining technologies, enabling the production of higher-quality petroleum products.

The Dangote refinery’s ramp-up in crude intake is a key factor in this import expansion, reflecting a broader shift in Nigeria’s energy sector towards greater reliance on imported crude to meet domestic refining needs.

Economic Implications and Expert Insights

Petroleum economist Wumi Iledare describes this surge as a fundamental transformation with wide-reaching economic consequences. He emphasizes that the impact on Nigeria’s economy will hinge on factors such as exchange rate stability, efficient allocation of domestic crude resources, and the operational efficiency of refineries.

“The substantial rise in crude oil imports from the US-surpassing 42 million barrels in just ten months-signals a structural change with significant macroeconomic and sectoral effects,” Iledare explained. He further noted that if Nigeria maintains macroeconomic stability and optimizes refinery utilization, the increased imports could positively influence national output, income levels, and employment rates.

Looking Ahead: Potential Trends and Market Outlook

Should the current trajectory continue, Nigeria’s total crude oil imports from the US for 2025 are expected to climb even higher by year-end. This trend underscores the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s oil industry, where private refineries are playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping crude sourcing strategies.

The shift towards US crude also reflects global market trends, where light sweet crude is preferred for its lower sulfur content and ease of refining, aligning with Nigeria’s ambitions to enhance its petroleum product quality and meet growing domestic demand.

Ondo State Police Nab 25-Year-Old for Running Unauthorized Medical Clinic in Ore

In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the Ondo State Police Command apprehended a 25-year-old individual suspected of operating an unlicensed medical facility in Ore, located within the Odigbo Local Government Area.

Details of the Arrest and Investigation

Idris Nasiru was detained on January 14, 2025, following a targeted intelligence operation conducted by the Command’s Surveillance Team. The arrest was announced by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement released on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

This action is part of the police’s intensified campaign to dismantle illegal medical practices that pose significant risks to community health and safety throughout Ondo State.

Evidence Seized During the Operation

During the raid on Nasiru’s clinic, officers recovered numerous medical supplies, including injection needles, intravenous drips, bandages, and various medical kits. A subsequent search of his residence, authorized by a court-issued warrant, uncovered used syringes, injection bottles, and needles, further substantiating the illegal nature of his activities.

Verification and Legal Proceedings

Preliminary inquiries confirmed that Nasiru is not a certified medical professional, validating suspicions that the clinic was unlawfully operated. He has provided statements while in custody and is expected to face prosecution once investigations conclude.

Police Commitment and Public Appeal

Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, praised the Surveillance Team for their swift and professional response, highlighting the critical role of intelligence-led policing in curbing criminal enterprises. He reassured the public of the Command’s dedication to protecting lives and property across the state.

CP Lawal also acknowledged the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, whose reforms and initiatives have bolstered efforts to combat medical-related offenses.

Community Cooperation and Safety Advisory

The Ondo State Police Command urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious medical activities to authorities. Residents are advised to verify the credentials of healthcare providers to avoid falling prey to fraudulent practitioners.

With medical quackery on the rise globally, including a 15% increase in reported cases in Nigeria over the past year, such vigilance is crucial. The police reaffirm their commitment to eradicating illegal medical practices and ensuring the wellbeing of the community.

My kids don’t know who is Jesus, Mohammed, God yet they are well behaved and disciplined – Nigerian man says

Raising Children Without Religion: A Nigerian Father’s Perspective from Poland

In a thought-provoking revelation, Nigerian father of four, Ewa Ekuma, currently residing in Poland, has shared his unconventional approach to parenting-raising his children without any religious influence. This disclosure, made public through a Facebook post dated January 18, 2026, challenges traditional norms by emphasizing critical thinking over religious teachings.

Parenting Beyond Religious Boundaries

Ekuma openly admits that his children have no knowledge of religious figures such as Jesus, Muhammad, God, or Allah. Despite this, he proudly notes that they exhibit exemplary behavior and discipline. He has actively removed them from all religious education programs at their schools, advocating for a new paradigm in child development.

“My children are unaware of who Jesus, Muhammad, God, or Allah are, yet they remain well-mannered and disciplined. I have withdrawn them from all religious studies at school. For Africa to advance, we must nurture children who think critically rather than those who simply fear God. This is an era for knowledge, not blind belief,” Ekuma stated.

The Case for Critical Thinking in Modern Education

Ekuma’s stance reflects a growing global conversation about the role of religion in education and child-rearing. Recent studies indicate that fostering critical thinking skills from an early age can lead to better problem-solving abilities and emotional intelligence. For instance, a 2024 UNESCO report highlights that children encouraged to question and analyze information tend to perform better academically and socially.

Global Examples of Secular Upbringing

Similar parenting philosophies have been observed in various parts of the world. In Scandinavian countries, where secularism is prevalent, children are often raised with an emphasis on ethics and reasoning rather than religious doctrine. This approach has been linked to high levels of social trust and civic engagement among youth.

Implications for African Societies

Ekuma’s message resonates particularly within the African context, where religion often plays a central role in daily life and education. His call to prioritize critical thinking over religious indoctrination invites a broader discussion on how societies can balance cultural traditions with the demands of a rapidly evolving world.

FG denies siting gold refinery in Lagos

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Refutes Northern Elders Forum’s Claims on Gold Refinery Location

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has categorically rejected assertions made by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) regarding the establishment of a gold refinery in Lagos, which the forum claimed contravened the federal character principle. The ministry labeled these allegations as inaccurate and misleading.

Clarification on Ownership and Location of Gold Refineries

In an official statement released from Abuja, Segun Tomori, Special Assistant to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, emphasized that Minister Dele Alake never declared that the Federal Government owns or has set up a gold refinery in Lagos or any other Nigerian state. Tomori clarified that the minister’s announcement pertained to the planned inauguration of a refinery, explicitly stating that multiple gold refineries are under development nationwide, all of which are privately owned by various companies.

“The minister was unequivocal in affirming that the refinery in question, along with others in progress across the country, are initiatives driven by private enterprises,” Tomori explained.

Private Sector Leadership in Nigeria’s Gold Industry

The newly commissioned gold refinery is a project spearheaded by Kian Smith, a private mining firm dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s gold sector through innovative approaches. Tomori highlighted that the Federal Government does not dictate the geographic placement of private companies’ operations; such decisions are made based on each company’s strategic and market considerations.

He also commended the founder and managing director of Kian Smith, Nere Emiko, for her visionary leadership and perseverance in bringing this flagship project to fruition after years of dedicated effort.

Alignment with Federal Government’s Value-Addition Policy

This refinery initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s policy aimed at adding value within the solid minerals sector. The policy discourages the export of unprocessed minerals and promotes local processing and manufacturing to stimulate economic growth.

Tomori pointed out that this strategy has catalyzed the establishment of mineral processing plants across Nigeria, attracting significant foreign investment and generating thousands of jobs. Notable examples include the $600 million lithium processing facility and a $400 million rare earth plant, both located in Nasarawa State, as well as the $200 million ASBA lithium plant in Abuja.

Impact of Sector Reforms and Call for Collaborative Support

Over the past two years, reforms implemented by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development have fostered a conducive environment for private sector growth and participation in mining. The Lagos gold refinery and similar projects serve as tangible proof of the positive outcomes of these reforms.

Tomori urged the Northern Elders Forum to support the Federal Government’s efforts to build a resilient and self-sufficient Nigerian economy by encouraging mining companies to establish processing and manufacturing facilities nationwide.

“We call on the Northern Elders Forum to collaborate with the Federal Government in nurturing an economy that genuinely benefits all Nigerians,” Tomori concluded.

Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ for Gaza to require $1bn payment for permanent membership

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Trump’s “Board of Peace” for Gaza Reconstruction: A $1 Billion Membership Threshold

In a bold move to oversee Gaza’s post-conflict recovery, former US President Donald Trump has proposed the establishment of a “Board of Peace.” This committee, designed to manage the rebuilding efforts in Gaza, introduces a unique membership model: permanent seats on the board require a substantial financial commitment of $1 billion, as disclosed by a US government insider.

Funding Model and Governance Structure

All capital raised through this initiative is earmarked exclusively for Gaza’s reconstruction. The board’s financial framework aims to circumvent the pitfalls of bloated administrative costs and inflated salaries, issues that have plagued many international aid organizations in the past. While participation on the board does not mandate a monetary contribution, those who opt out of the $1 billion payment will be restricted to three-year terms. Conversely, contributors securing the hefty fee will enjoy permanent membership privileges.

High-Profile Figures and Global Invitations

The board is set to feature an array of influential political and economic leaders. Notable invitees include former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Several other world leaders have reportedly received invitations to join what Trump has hailed as “the most prestigious and impactful board ever convened.” Bloomberg was the first to report on the financial prerequisite for permanent membership.

Strategic Role in Gaza’s Stabilization

This board forms a cornerstone of a broader US-backed, United Nations-supported strategy aimed at demilitarizing Gaza and facilitating its long-term recovery following two years of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas. Each board member is expected to oversee a critical sector essential to Gaza’s stabilization, such as infrastructure, economic development, or security reform.

Notable Absences and Political Implications

Interestingly, the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs parts of the West Bank and is anticipated to play a significant role in Gaza’s future governance, is not represented on the board. This exclusion is significant given the PA’s rivalry with Hamas and its expected leadership role following planned political and administrative reforms in Gaza.

Additional Key Members and Supporting Bodies

Other prominent figures slated to join the board include Trump’s foreign policy envoy Steve Witkoff, Deputy National Security Adviser Robert Gabriel, Jared Kushner, billionaire investor Marc Rowan, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. Operational governance of Gaza is proposed to be handled by a Palestinian technocratic committee, supported by a “Gaza executive board” comprising representatives from Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, alongside select members from the Board of Peace and the technocratic committee.

Controversies and Regional Reactions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has openly criticized the involvement of Turkey and Qatar in the initiative, stating that the board’s formation was not coordinated with Israel and contradicts its security policies. Israel has long accused both nations of supporting Hamas, fueling tensions around their participation in Gaza’s reconstruction efforts.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

As the international community watches closely, the success of this ambitious plan hinges on balancing financial commitments, political inclusivity, and regional cooperation. With Gaza’s infrastructure devastated and humanitarian needs escalating-UN reports estimate that over 80% of Gaza’s population requires aid-the Board of Peace’s approach could set a new precedent for post-conflict reconstruction governance.

Human Remains Discovered on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway During Routine Check

In a startling incident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, law enforcement officials uncovered human bones concealed within passengers’ belongings during a standard vehicle inspection. This discovery has raised serious concerns and prompted an ongoing investigation.

Details of the Incident

Federal Highway Patrol officers conducting a routine stop-and-search operation near Guru Maharaji Village in Oyo State intercepted a commercial vehicle traveling from Lagos to Osogbo. Upon inspection, authorities found a red cloth wrapped around what appeared to be human bones and other related items hidden among the luggage.

Suspect Apprehended and Investigation Underway

The driver, identified as Kazeem Ayegbo, was immediately detained for questioning. According to Adewale Osifeso, the Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Police Command, investigations have commenced to trace the origin of the remains and to uncover the purpose behind their transportation. Efforts are being made to extend the inquiry beyond Oyo State to identify all individuals involved.

Law Enforcement’s Commitment to Justice

The police have assured the public that the case is being handled with the highest level of professionalism and thoroughness. Once investigations are complete, the suspect will face prosecution in court. This incident highlights the critical role of routine highway patrols in maintaining public safety and curbing illicit activities.

Context and Broader Implications

Incidents involving the illegal transport of human remains are rare but deeply troubling. According to recent data from the Nigerian Police Force, highway patrols have increased by 15% in the last year to combat rising cases of smuggling and trafficking along major routes like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This case underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting communities and upholding the rule of law.

Malami’s son rearrested after release from prison

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Abdulaziz Malami Rearrested at Kuje Prison Following Bail Release

Security operatives have taken Abdulaziz Malami, son of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, back into custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja shortly after he was granted bail and prepared for release.

Unexpected Rearrest Despite Court Bail Procedures

Sources reveal that the rearrest came amid intensified security operations, even though Federal High Court bailiffs had arrived at the prison with all necessary bail documentation to facilitate Abdulaziz’s discharge. The intervention by security agents occurred immediately after the court officials handed him over for release.

According to insiders, “He was formally released to the court bailiffs with complete bail paperwork but was promptly detained again by security personnel.”

Background of the Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Abdulaziz, alongside his father Abubakar Malami and his mother Asabe Malami, is currently facing trial before Justice Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja. They are accused of involvement in a money laundering scheme amounting to approximately ₦8.7 billion. Earlier this month, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully obtained an interim forfeiture order on 57 properties linked to the Malami family.

Details on Forfeited Assets and Their Locations

The seized properties, collectively valued at around ₦213.23 billion, span across multiple states including Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna. Several of these assets are reportedly connected not only to Abubakar Malami but also to his sons Abdulaziz and Abiru-Rahman, as well as his wife Asabe.

Context and Implications

This development highlights the ongoing crackdown on alleged financial crimes involving high-profile individuals in Nigeria. The EFCC’s aggressive pursuit of asset forfeiture reflects a broader governmental effort to recover illicit wealth and reinforce accountability. Similar high-profile cases in recent years have seen significant recoveries, such as the ₦150 billion asset seizure linked to former government officials in 2023.

As the trial progresses, the legal community and public observers remain attentive to the outcomes, which could set important precedents for anti-corruption enforcement in the country.

“Church almost turned me into a runs girl” lady opens up on choir uniform pressure that pushed her to quit

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Pressure and Challenges Faced by Choir Members in Nigerian Churches

A Nigerian woman recently opened up about the overwhelming demands placed on choir members in her former church, revealing how these pressures nearly compelled her to compromise her values just to maintain appearances.

Joining the Choir: A Passion for Singing Meets Unexpected Demands

Fresh out of secondary school, she eagerly joined the church choir, driven by her love for singing and a strong vocal ability. However, her enthusiasm was soon dampened by the realization that the choir required members to adhere to a strict and costly dress code.

The Financial Burden of Multiple Uniforms

According to her account, choir members were expected to own numerous outfits-ranging from different camisoles and suits to shoes in various colors-each designated for specific Sunday services. Sometimes, members had to change outfits multiple times during the same day. With weekly services and ever-changing attire requirements, the financial strain became significant.

Compromises Made to Meet Expectations

She disclosed that many young girls in the choir, including herself and her peers, felt pressured to find money by any means necessary to afford the mandated clothing and accessories. Those unable to meet these demands were marginalized, often pushed to the sidelines during performances.

Favoritism and Social Cliques Within the Choir

Girls who could afford expensive shoes and bags were often given preferential treatment, while those from less affluent backgrounds faced neglect, gossip, and exclusion. This created a divisive atmosphere, where only a select few received recognition and support.

Questioning the Church’s Role in Supporting Choir Members

She raised a critical point about the church’s responsibility, questioning why institutions that insist on frequent wardrobe changes do not provide financial assistance or sponsor the required uniforms. “If the choir is expected to change clothes every week, the church should bear the cost,” she argued. “Young girls cannot be expected to fund this on their own.”

Choosing to Step Away for Personal Wellbeing

Eventually, the woman decided to leave the choir and return to sitting with the congregation. This decision sparked rumors and criticism but ultimately allowed her to regain perspective and prioritize her mental health. “I stopped before I lost myself,” she reflected, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness in such environments.

A Cautionary Message for Young People

She concluded by advising young individuals to be wary of spaces that emphasize outward appearances over genuine wellbeing. Unchecked pressures in religious settings, she warned, can quietly undermine lives if not addressed early.

Contextual Insight: The Broader Impact of Uniform Pressures

Recent studies indicate that similar pressures in various community groups can lead to increased stress and financial hardship among youth. For example, a 2023 survey by the Nigerian Youth Empowerment Foundation found that 42% of young people involved in extracurricular activities reported feeling overwhelmed by associated costs, leading some to disengage entirely.

Alternative Approaches to Supporting Choir Members

Some churches have begun adopting more inclusive policies, such as providing uniforms or organizing clothing drives to ease the financial burden on members. These initiatives not only foster unity but also ensure that participation is based on passion and talent rather than economic status.

She procured an illegal ab@rtion for Regina, sourced and administered illegal substances on her- Ned Nwoko gives reasons for effecting the arrest of Regina’s bestfriend, Ann

by hassan January 19, 2026
written by hassan

Senator Ned Nwoko Details Justification for Arresting Regina Daniels’ Confidante, Ann Izugbe

In a recent development stirring public attention, Nigerian Senator Ned Nwoko has publicly clarified the circumstances that led to the apprehension of Ann Izugbe, who is known to be the closest friend of his estranged wife, actress Regina Daniels.

Background of the Arrest

Approximately two weeks ago, law enforcement officials took Ann into custody in Abuja, where she remains detained. The arrest sparked immediate backlash from Regina Daniels, who publicly condemned Senator Nwoko’s actions against her close associate.

Senator Nwoko’s Statement on the Charges

Addressing the controversy on his social media platform, Senator Nwoko, who serves as the representative for Delta North Senatorial District, outlined multiple allegations against Ann Izugbe. Central to his claims is that Ann defamed him by falsely accusing him online of physically assaulting his fifth wife, Laila, during her pregnancy, an incident he firmly denies ever occurred.

Allegations of Illegal Abortion and Substance Abuse

Further intensifying the accusations, Nwoko alleges that Ann orchestrated an unlawful abortion for Regina Daniels while she was still married to him. According to the senator, Ann administered a concoction of cannabis to Regina, which he claims led to the termination of her pregnancy. He also accuses Ann of procuring and administering illicit drugs to Regina during their marriage, actions he deems criminal and harmful.

Context and Implications

This case highlights the complex and often turbulent nature of high-profile relationships in Nigeria’s entertainment and political spheres. Illegal abortion remains a contentious issue in Nigeria, where restrictive laws and social stigma often complicate access to safe reproductive health services. According to the World Health Organization, unsafe abortions contribute significantly to maternal mortality in Nigeria, underscoring the gravity of such allegations.

Moreover, the use of prohibited substances like cannabis is illegal under Nigerian law, with penalties that can include imprisonment. The senator’s public disclosure of these accusations against Ann Izugbe adds a legal dimension to what has been a highly publicized personal dispute.

Visual Documentation

Conclusion

As the legal proceedings continue, the public awaits further updates on the case involving Ann Izugbe. This incident not only sheds light on the personal conflicts within prominent Nigerian families but also raises awareness about the legal and social challenges surrounding defamation, illegal abortion, and drug use in the country.

Ghana Cracks Down on Cybercrime: 53 Nigerians Detained in Major Operation

In a decisive move to combat cybercrime, Ghanaian security forces have apprehended 53 Nigerian nationals suspected of involvement in extensive cybercriminal activities. This large-scale crackdown targeted multiple suspected cybercrime hotspots within the Greater Accra Region, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to securing its digital environment and preserving its global cyber reputation.

Intelligence-Led Raids Uncover Cybercrime Networks

According to Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, the arrests followed intelligence gathered over 48 hours by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA). The information pinpointed several locations in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba as centers for coordinated cyber offenses.

The intelligence revealed that many young men, predominantly foreign nationals, were being manipulated by criminal masterminds to execute cyber fraud and related offenses from these sites.

Joint Security Task Force Executes Coordinated Raids

On January 16 and 17, 2026, a collaborative task force comprising operatives from National Security Operations, the CSA, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and the Ghana Police Service SWAT Unit conducted simultaneous raids across the identified locations. These operations led to the arrest of nine key suspects believed to be orchestrating the cybercrime syndicate, while 44 others were rescued from exploitation.

Evidence Seized Highlights Sophistication of Cybercrime Ring

Authorities recovered a significant cache of equipment used in cyber offenses, including 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action firearms. The suspects were found operating from multiple apartments, indicating a highly organized and structured criminal network.

Breakdown of arrests by location includes:

  • East Legon Hills: 5 suspects
  • Afienya: 11 suspects
  • Kwabenya: 10 suspects
  • Weija: 10 suspects
  • Tuba: 17 suspects

Human Trafficking and Cyber Exploitation Concerns

Among those detained, 44 individuals are believed to be victims of human trafficking and cybercrime exploitation, highlighting the intersection between digital fraud and human rights abuses. These individuals were found working under duress, often lured by false promises of lucrative employment.

Government Response and Future Measures

All detainees have been processed and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and custody. Minister George urged foreign nationals to exercise caution against deceptive recruitment tactics and to verify job offers thoroughly before relocating.

He also noted that previous cybercrime suspects had been profiled in collaboration with INTERPOL, with some extradited to Nigeria via the Seme border, while others face prosecution within Ghana.

Protecting Ghana’s Cyber Integrity

Minister George emphasized that safeguarding Ghana’s digital reputation on the international stage remains a top priority. He praised the CSA and law enforcement agencies for their effective collaboration in dismantling this cybercrime network.
