From oil fields to solar microgrids: Africa’s pragmatic path to a just energy transition

by hassan January 23, 2026
written by hassan

Rethinking Africa’s Energy Future: Beyond the Fossil Fuels vs. Renewables Debate

Discussions about Africa’s energy transformation often simplify the issue into a stark choice between fossil fuels and renewable energy. While this binary framing may resonate in advocacy campaigns, it fails to capture the complex realities shaping the continent’s energy landscape.

From the oil-rich Niger Delta to remote villages powered by solar microgrids, Africa’s path forward demands a pragmatic, phased approach that balances expanding energy access, fostering industrial development, and reducing carbon emissions.

Lessons from Experience: Bridging Traditional and Emerging Energy Sectors

Having worked extensively in both the oil and renewable sectors, I have witnessed firsthand the necessity of integrating these energy sources rather than viewing them as mutually exclusive. Early in my career, I co-founded Afren plc, one of the pioneering African-focused energy companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, and later led First Hydrocarbon Nigeria Ltd. in acquiring upstream oil assets from Shell’s Nigerian joint venture. These milestones marked a significant shift toward indigenous ownership in Africa’s oil industry.

These experiences underscored a critical insight: Africa’s energy transition must be tailored to its unique context. Unlike developed economies with established grids and abundant capital, African nations face the dual challenge of scaling energy access while simultaneously supporting industrialization and curbing emissions.

The Vital Role of Natural Gas as a Transitional Energy Source

Calls for an immediate leap to 100% renewable energy, though well-intentioned, overlook the current limitations of grid infrastructure and energy storage across much of Africa. Natural gas emerges as an essential bridging fuel, providing the stable baseload power necessary to complement intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind.

This approach is not about postponing decarbonization but sequencing it thoughtfully. Clean energy solutions must be economically sustainable and capable of powering critical sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and urban development. Without reliable power, efforts to eradicate energy poverty risk faltering.

Innovative Private Sector Models Driving Integrated Energy Solutions

Private enterprises are increasingly adopting hybrid energy models that blend renewables with natural gas to optimize both sustainability and reliability. For instance, Solad Power Group began by deploying decentralized solar solutions in partnership with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency across Lagos, Ogun, and Kano states. Today, the company is expanding its focus to commercial and industrial clients, where reducing emissions must align with operational dependability and cost-effectiveness.

A notable project involves collaboration with the OML 34 NNPC/ND Western Joint Venture, where solar installations are integrated to decarbonize oil operations while maintaining resilience. This strategy prioritizes tangible efficiency improvements over superficial “greenwashing.”

Such initiatives align closely with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which explicitly recognizes the complementary roles of gas and renewables during the transition period.

Policy and Financial Instruments Catalyzing Decentralized Energy Access

Policy frameworks across West Africa are beginning to reflect this hybrid reality. Programs like the World Bank’s $750 million Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) and the Mission 300 initiative are mobilizing funds to expand decentralized power solutions. Additionally, mechanisms such as the Universal Energy Facility and Distributed Renewable Energy funds are instrumental in mitigating risks for early-stage projects.

However, policy ambition alone is insufficient without effective implementation. The primary bottleneck remains access to capital-particularly patient, blended finance capable of managing risks including currency fluctuations. To unlock Africa’s energy potential, governments, multilateral organizations, and private investors must collaborate on bankable project structures, foster local manufacturing capabilities, and develop scalable delivery models. While capital exists, it requires strategic deployment to maximize impact.

Building Africa’s Energy Future: Integration Over Substitution

Africa’s energy transition will be defined not by what it discards but by what it constructs. The continent’s future energy system will be a mosaic of hydrocarbons, solar power, centralized grids, and decentralized networks working in harmony. This integrated approach promises a transition that is not only environmentally sustainable but also equitable and conducive to long-term economic growth.

By embracing a sequenced, pragmatic strategy, Africa can lead a global example of how to power development while safeguarding the planet.

Finlogic secures International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO) licence in Nigeria

by hassan January 23, 2026
written by hassan

Finlogic Obtains Central Bank of Nigeria’s IMTO Licence to Boost International Remittances

Finlogic has recently been granted an International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO) licence by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), empowering the company to directly manage inbound international remittance flows. This strategic approval highlights Finlogic’s commitment to regulatory compliance and its pivotal role in enhancing Nigeria’s foreign exchange liquidity.

Enhancing Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange Market Through Direct Remittance Processing

With this new licence, Finlogic is positioned to streamline the remittance process by eliminating intermediary layers, enabling faster transaction settlements and offering more competitive pricing for Nigerians living abroad. This direct integration with Nigeria’s financial infrastructure not only improves efficiency but also ensures that international transfers are fully accounted for within the formal economy, supporting the CBN’s revenue objectives.

Strengthening Partnerships and Ensuring Regulatory Compliance

Finlogic’s IMTO status facilitates closer collaboration with local banks, guaranteeing that every transaction adheres to stringent global regulatory standards. This institutional security is crucial for maintaining trust and transparency in cross-border money transfers, especially as the CBN anticipates remittance inflows to reach $1 billion monthly by 2026.

Leveraging a Secure North American Corridor with Canadian MSB Licence

Complementing its Nigerian IMTO licence, Finlogic also holds a Money Services Business (MSB) licence in Canada. This dual-licence framework establishes a fully compliant, secure corridor for remittance inflows from North America, enhancing the reliability and transparency of funds sent home by the Nigerian diaspora.

“Our goal is to ensure that Nigerians abroad can send money home with complete transparency and confidence,” said Joseph Afolabi, Founder and CEO of Finlogic. “The IMTO licence enables us to be a trusted partner for inward remittances, contributing to the stability of Nigeria’s economy.”

Finlogic’s Journey: From Vision to Impact

Since its inception seven years ago, Finlogic has focused on resolving complex settlement challenges through innovative technology. By leveraging its advanced platform, the company simplifies inward remittance processes, supporting the CBN’s mission to sustain a resilient and liquid foreign exchange market.

Looking Ahead: Supporting Nigeria’s Economic Growth

As remittance inflows continue to grow globally-reaching an estimated $700 billion worldwide in 2025 according to the World Bank-Finlogic’s enhanced capabilities position it as a key player in channeling these vital funds into Nigeria’s economy. By providing a seamless, secure, and cost-effective remittance service, Finlogic is helping to bridge the gap between the Nigerian diaspora and their home country, fostering economic development and financial inclusion.

Kano Governor Yusuf Resigns from NNPP Amid Internal Divisions

by Ayodeji Onibalusi January 23, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing prolonged internal crises and legal disputes within the party.

In a letter addressed to his ward chairman, Governor Yusuf said persistent factional challenges had hindered the party’s stability, adding that his decision—effective January 25, 2026—was taken in the best interest of the people of Kano State.

The move appears to have triggered a major political realignment in the state. Reports indicate that up to 73 elected officials followed the governor’s exit, including 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers representing Kano constituencies, and all 44 local government chairmen.

Shortly after the announcement, NNPP flags were removed from the Government House in Kano, a symbolic gesture underscoring the scale of the shift and the governor’s decisive break from the party.

While Governor Yusuf has yet to publicly announce his next political destination, analysts say the development significantly alters Kano’s political landscape and could have far-reaching implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Further reactions from the NNPP leadership and other political parties are expected in the coming days as the situation continues to unfold.

NBA Condemns Alleged Appointment of Convicted Ex-Pension Boss as Patron, Orders Immediate Reversal

NBA Condemns Alleged Appointment of Convicted Ex-Pension Boss as Patron, Orders Immediate Reversal

The Nigerian Bar Association has strongly condemned the purported appointment of Abdulrasheed Maina, a former public official convicted of pension fraud, as “Grand Patron” of the NBA Garki Branch, describing the move as a grave affront to the legal profession and Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.

In a statement signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe, the association said the reported appointment, allegedly made by the Chairman of the NBA Garki Branch, “makes a mockery of the legal profession and the fight against corruption.” The NBA stressed that it would not, under any guise, lend its name, platform, or institutional credibility to actions that could be perceived as laundering the image of any person convicted of criminal offences or influencing judicial proceedings.

The association noted that while it respects every citizen’s right to exhaust appellate remedies, it will not comment on or appear to sway public opinion regarding cases that are sub judice. It described comments attributed to the branch leadership about Mr. Maina’s pending appeal as “equally reprehensible,” warning that such conduct undermines public confidence in the justice system.

Directing immediate corrective action, the NBA ordered the Chairman of the Garki Branch to withdraw any purported appointment forthwith and to cease issuing statements or representations in support of Mr. Maina or any other litigant with matters before the courts. The association further announced that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated against the branch chairman for conduct inconsistent with the NBA Constitution and the Rules of Professional Conduct.

Reaffirming its core values of integrity, accountability, and respect for the judicial process, the NBA said any conduct that condones or appears to condone corruption would attract “firm and decisive institutional response,” and formally disclaimed the alleged appointment.

Official Announcement and Personal Background

The Gombe State Government confirmed the unfortunate death in an official statement released on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The announcement was made by Ambassador Yusuf Danbayo, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security and Intergovernmental Affairs.

According to the statement, Nazifi passed away following a brief illness during his training period. He was a native of Buba Bani Village in Kashere Ward, Akko Local Government Area, and was registered under the application number 90RRI-GO-9017726.

Honoring a Committed Patriot

Ambassador Danbayo expressed deep grief over the loss, highlighting Ibrahim Nazifi’s dedication and patriotism in answering the nation’s call to serve. His death has profoundly impacted not only his family but also the wider community in Gombe State, particularly residents of Akko Local Government Area.

“This tragic loss reverberates beyond his immediate family, touching the hearts of all citizens and supporters in Gombe State,” Danbayo stated.

Messages of Sympathy and Spiritual Support

On behalf of the Gombe State Government, Danbayo extended sincere condolences to Nazifi’s relatives, friends, and fellow recruits. He prayed for divine mercy and forgiveness, hoping that the late recruit’s earnest service would be accepted as a noble sacrifice.

“May Allah, the Most Merciful, forgive him, accept his dedication, and grant him a place in Aljannatul Firdaus,” he added.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Efforts

While fatalities during military training are uncommon, they underscore the intense physical and psychological challenges faced by new soldiers. The Nigerian Army has recently enhanced healthcare provisions and welfare programs at training centers to better protect recruits’ health. The Ministry of Defence reports that over 10,000 recruits undergo training annually, with rigorous medical evaluations and support systems designed to prevent such incidents.

The passing of Ibrahim Nazifi serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dedicate themselves to national defense, reinforcing the imperative to prioritize the safety and well-being of all military trainees.

Catholic priest steps down after gro0ming and misconduct allegations

by hassan January 23, 2026
written by hassan

Oxford University Chaplain Resigns Amid Allegations of Misconduct

A senior Catholic priest serving at the University of Oxford has stepped down following serious accusations of inappropriate behavior made by a student under his pastoral care.

Background and Appointment

Father Damian Howard, who took on the role of Senior Chaplain at the Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy (OUCC) in early 2023, has left his position after a vulnerable student reported allegations of sexual misconduct. Howard, previously the Provincial Superior of Jesuits in Britain for six years, was known for his leadership within the Jesuit community before transitioning to the chaplaincy role.

Details of the Allegations

The student accused Father Howard of initiating sexual contact while the student was intoxicated, encouraging him to share his bed, and removing his clothing. The priest reportedly urged the student to keep the incidents confidential, warning that disclosure would damage his reputation. The student described the priest’s actions as a betrayal of trust, stating that instead of providing impartial spiritual support, Howard exploited his vulnerability to alleviate his own loneliness.

Investigation and Outcome

Following the complaint, Jesuits in Britain launched a thorough safeguarding investigation, which included interviews and a detailed review of documented interactions. The inquiry substantiated the claims, leading to Howard being asked to resign in August 2023. Despite this, the OUCC and Jesuits in Britain did not publicly announce the resignation or the reasons behind it at that time.

A spokesperson for Jesuits in Britain emphasized their commitment to handling all complaints with seriousness and care, explaining that their procedures involve structured assessments and, when necessary, independent external reviews. They confirmed that Father Howard has not been active in ministry since stepping down and that they are awaiting further recommendations from an ongoing independent review conducted by the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency (CCSA).

Context and Broader Implications

Father Howard had previously issued a personal apology to victims of Peter Orr, a Jesuit priest accused of abusing boys over several decades, highlighting the Jesuit community’s ongoing reckoning with past abuses. The current case underscores the challenges religious institutions face in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and maintaining transparency.

In October 2023, Jesuit leadership informed the student that while no definitive evidence of grooming was found, the independent review continues to evaluate the handling of the complaint to ensure accountability and justice.

Official Statements and Next Steps

The OUCC confirmed that Father Howard’s resignation was due to substantiated professional misconduct following the student’s complaint and the subsequent investigation. They have indicated openness to providing further information as the review progresses.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding protocols within faith-based organizations, especially in academic environments where students may be particularly vulnerable. It also reflects a growing demand for transparency and accountability in addressing allegations of abuse.

You can’t take me to the prison. Stop gloating about it – Activist, Detoun Onajobi, drags Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun

Activist Detoun Adejobi Challenges Ogun State Governor Amid Cyberbullying Allegations

Detoun Adejobi, a prominent activist, has publicly confronted Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun following the filing of six charges against her by the Ogun State Police Command. The charges, brought before the Abeokuta High Court, accuse her of cyberbullying the governor on social media platforms.

Background: The Controversial Social Media Post

In December 2025, Detoun Adejobi criticized Governor Abiodun on social media after a tragic accident claimed the lives of two close friends of renowned boxer Anthony Joshua. She condemned the Ogun State Government for lacking an ambulance service, highlighting what she described as a failure in basic emergency response infrastructure. In a viral video, she labeled the governor as “wicked,” accusing him of prioritizing personal indulgences and corruption over the welfare of the state. She further urged divine forgiveness for those responsible for his upbringing.

Police Response and Legal Proceedings

On January 19, 2026, the Ogun State Police Command announced that they had formally charged Adejobi with cyberbullying and spreading false information about the governor. The police alleged that she ignored multiple invitations to respond to the allegations, submitting a medical report to justify her absence, which was later declared fraudulent. Authorities confirmed the arrest of the medical professional who issued the questionable document. For more details, see here.

Detoun Adejobi’s Rebuttal and Public Statement

Addressing the accusations on her Instagram account, Adejobi denied evading the police. She stated that she acknowledged the police invitation and had confirmed her availability for January 27, expressing surprise at the police’s premature public statement accusing her of avoidance.

She refuted the cyberbullying claims, asserting that her criticisms stem from a genuine concern for Ogun State residents. Adejobi contrasted Governor Abiodun’s governance style unfavorably with that of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose administration she praised for responsiveness to public grievances. She accused Abiodun and his aides of ignoring citizens’ concerns and prioritizing social events over governance.

“What legacy are you leaving behind? An unfeeling leader… What have you accomplished in six years, and what will remain? Look at the current state of Ogun. You may think I’m politically motivated, but I speak for my people, and they don’t have to like my words.

Dapo, I have brought you down to where you belong! You ignored us for years, but we reject silent governance. You must be accountable. When we speak, you will listen.

You threatened to imprison me? You don’t know who you’re dealing with. Those who came before you failed, and this is our country. You cannot silence me.”

On the Use of Cybercrime Laws Against Critics

Adejobi criticized public officials for exploiting cybercrime legislation to suppress dissent. She emphasized that as a sitting governor, Abiodun should expect and accept accountability from his constituents, who have the right to question his leadership publicly.

“I told you, Dapo, you lack proper upbringing. If you had it, you wouldn’t misuse your power or gloat. You’re desperate to secure a Senate seat but can’t protect or defend your people. Who are you really? People say I abused you, but when I pleaded and cried, how many witnessed it?

This is a battle between you and me. Bring it on-I’m not running. What supports me is greater than you. You cannot imprison me. Stop gloating. Your predecessors failed at this. Face me and prove my allegations wrong-I’m ready.

Your state is unsettled, yet you fly to France for parties. Always attending social events instead of governing!”
