Ondo police arrests seven employees for allegedly stealing goods worth N20m from their employers shop

Ondo State Police Nab Seven Suspects in N20.45 Million Theft from Ore Commercial Outlet

The Ondo State Police Command has successfully apprehended seven individuals implicated in a large-scale theft and conspiracy case involving merchandise valued at approximately ₦20.45 million. The stolen goods were taken from a commercial establishment located in Ore, within the Odigbo Local Government Area.

Details of the Incident and Investigation

According to a statement released by DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the police spokesperson, the case was brought to light on January 3, 2026, when Ogunyomi Segun, a resident of Ore, filed a complaint at the Ore Divisional Police Headquarters. He reported that over a period spanning from 2024 to early 2026, several employees at his store colluded to embezzle various products.

The stolen items included a range of beverages such as soft drinks and Trophy canned drinks, among other canned products. The total value of the pilfered goods was estimated at Twenty Million, Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦20,450,000).

Suspects and Their Roles

The suspects identified in the case include the storekeeper, Oyineke Joseph; the computer operator, Abioye Yusuf; and another staff member, Abdullahi Quadir. Additionally, three individuals who received the stolen goods-Michael Njoku, Agu Monday, and Ikuemehin Oloruntimilehin-along with a driver named Ojewuyi, were also taken into custody.

Confession and Next Steps

During the police inquiry, all suspects admitted their involvement and provided detailed accounts of their specific roles in orchestrating and executing the theft. The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the accused will be formally charged in court once the process is complete.

Context and Broader Implications

This case highlights the growing concern over internal theft within retail businesses in Nigeria. According to recent data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, inventory shrinkage due to employee theft accounts for a significant portion of losses in the retail sector, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures and employee vetting processes.

Similar incidents have been reported in other states, such as Lagos and Rivers, where coordinated theft rings have targeted commercial outlets, resulting in multi-million naira losses. These developments underscore the importance of community vigilance and robust law enforcement collaboration to curb such criminal activities.

Nigerians dig up old video of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the act of Nigerians abroad to study law

by hassan January 24, 2026
written by hassan

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s Past Remarks on Studying Law Abroad Resurface Amid Son’s UK Degree

Recently, an archival video of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has resurfaced online, drawing attention to his earlier stance against sending Nigerian students overseas to pursue law degrees.

Context Behind the Controversy

This development comes shortly after Wike’s son earned a Master’s degree in Law from King’s College London, sparking discussions about the minister’s consistency regarding foreign education.

Wike’s Position on Local vs. Foreign Legal Education

In the video, Wike, who previously served as the Governor of Rivers State, expressed his viewpoint on the necessity of studying certain disciplines abroad. He emphasized the quality of Nigerian universities, stating:

“For many courses, it’s unnecessary to send students overseas. We have consistently asked: why send someone to study English abroad? Why should a student pursue Economics or Law in foreign institutions when Nigerian universities offer excellent programs in these fields?”

Evaluating the Quality of Nigerian Legal Education

Wike’s remarks highlight a broader debate about the value of local education versus international exposure. According to the 2023 National Universities Commission (NUC) report, Nigerian universities have made significant strides in improving their law faculties, with over 70% of law graduates passing the Nigerian Bar Examination in recent years.

However, many Nigerian families still opt for foreign education, believing it offers better global recognition and networking opportunities. For instance, a 2022 survey by the Nigerian Education Trust Fund revealed that approximately 35% of Nigerian law students pursue degrees abroad, predominantly in the UK and the US.

Balancing Tradition and Modern Educational Aspirations

Wike’s comments invite reflection on the balance between supporting domestic institutions and recognizing the benefits of international academic experiences. While local universities continue to enhance their curricula and facilities, studying abroad can provide exposure to diverse legal systems and global perspectives.

Florence Ajimobi Declares Battle for 2027 Oyo Governorship, Targets Makinde’s PDP

by Ayodeji Onibalusi January 24, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Florence Ajimobi, widow of former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, has issued a strong declaration ahead of the 2027 Oyo State governorship election, vowing a fierce contest against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party led by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speaking in a political gathering, Ajimobi said the camp aligned with her late husband’s legacy is “going to war” in the 2027 governorship race, claiming it has both federal backing and the financial strength required to challenge the PDP’s dominance in the state.

Her comments signal an early escalation of political tensions in Oyo State, reopening old rivalries between the APC bloc associated with the late former governor and the incumbent administration. Analysts say the statement underscores the likelihood of an intense political contest as alignments and strategies begin to take shape well ahead of the election cycle.

Neither the Oyo State Government nor the PDP has formally responded to the remarks as of the time of filing this report.

FG’s CCTV System Nabs Three Vandals on Third Mainland Bridge

by Ayodeji Onibalusi January 24, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

The Federal Government has recorded its first major breakthrough with the newly deployed CCTV surveillance system on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge, as three suspected vandals were caught in real time while attempting to damage public infrastructure.

The suspects were arrested after CCTV operators detected them prying open 156 cat-eye reflective lights installed to improve road safety and aesthetics on the bridge. The arrest was announced during a parade of the suspects, monitored live by officials of the Ministry of Works and security agencies.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, urged Nigerians to take collective responsibility for protecting public infrastructure, warning that vandalism undermines national development and public safety. He expressed concern over what he described as growing indifference toward government assets.

The suspects, who claimed to be scavengers popularly referred to as “Bola,” were unable to provide coherent explanations for their actions during questioning. Umahi commended the Nigeria Police for their swift response and directed the state controller of works to ensure the suspects are prosecuted.

The minister also condemned reckless behavior by some road users on the temporarily opened section of the coastal highway, noting that such indiscipline recently led to the death of a construction worker. He warned that the CCTV “eagle eye” system on the Third Mainland Bridge is fully operational and will continue to track and deter criminal activities.

Authorities say the arrests demonstrate the effectiveness of the new surveillance infrastructure and signal a tougher stance against vandalism of public assets.

Oyo State Strengthens Measures Against Rent and Commission Exploitation

Government Engages Estate Agents to Address Housing Sector Challenges

In a proactive move to tackle the escalating issues of rent and commission exploitation, the Oyo State Government convened a crucial meeting with representatives from the Estate Rent and Commission Agents Association on Wednesday. This engagement underscores the administration’s dedication to safeguarding tenants’ rights and promoting transparency within the state’s housing market.

Regulatory Framework to Oversee Estate Agent Practices

During the session held at the office of the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Honorable Akin-Funmilayo Williams emphasized the necessity of instituting regulatory controls over estate agents’ operations. While acknowledging that the government does not have the authority to set rental prices directly, the Commissioner highlighted that legal mechanisms can be implemented to curb exploitative behaviors and ensure fair dealings between landlords, agents, and tenants.

Enhancing Tenant Protection Amid Growing Housing Demand

With Oyo State experiencing a surge in urban population and housing demand-statistics from recent urban development reports indicate a 15% increase in rental housing needs over the past two years-the government’s intervention aims to create a more equitable rental environment. By collaborating with estate agents, the state seeks to eliminate unethical practices such as inflated commissions and arbitrary rent hikes, which have adversely affected many residents.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Housing Sector Reforms

The dialogue between government officials and estate agents marks the beginning of a broader initiative to reform the housing sector. Future plans include the introduction of a standardized code of conduct for estate agents, tenant education programs, and the establishment of a monitoring body to enforce compliance. These steps are designed to foster trust, reduce conflicts, and promote sustainable growth within Oyo State’s real estate market.
