NSCDC arrests child trafficker, rescues five children in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully detained a 31-year-old individual, Jerry Peter, on charges related to child trafficking.During a press conference held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Gusau-the state capital-the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, Mansur Mohammed, revealed that this arrest is part of the Corps’ ongoing commitment to uphold security and enforce laws throughout Zamfara State.

According to Mohammed, the suspect was apprehended on the night of January 24, 2026, around 10:00 p.m. in the Lalan district of Gusau. Jerry Peter was found transporting five children, aged between eight and thirteen years, suspected to be victims of trafficking.

Initial inquiries indicated that the children were being moved from Zuru towards multiple destinations, including Kaduna, Benue State, and Benin City in Edo State.

Further investigation uncovered that the trafficker intended to deliver the minors to a woman known locally as “Mommy Bishop,” facilitated through Reverend James Joshua of the Assembly of God Church in Benin City.

Following orders from the State Commandant, Commandant Sani Mustafa, both the suspect and the rescued children were transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to continue with detailed investigations and appropriate legal proceedings.

Child trafficking remains a critical issue in Nigeria, with recent reports from NAPTIP indicating a 15% increase in trafficking cases in the northern regions over the past year. This arrest underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between security agencies and community leaders to combat this menace.

Man Arrested in Kano for Assaulting Mother Over Illegal Firearm

The Kano State Police Command has taken into custody a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, following an incident in the Panshekara Quarters where he physically attacked his mother. The confrontation arose after the mother discovered a Barreta pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition concealed in her son’s bag.

Details of the Incident and Police Response

According to CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police public relations officer, officers from the Panshekara Division responded promptly to a distress call on the evening of January 25, 2026, around 7:30 pm. Upon arrival, they found James assaulting his mother at their home. The suspect attempted to flee but was later apprehended by the police.

The mother revealed that she had refused to return the firearm to her son after discovering it, which triggered the violent attack. She also noted a worrying change in his demeanor following his return from New Year festivities, raising concerns about his recent behavior.

Police Commissioner Praises Mother’s Courage and Issues Warning

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, lauded the mother’s bravery in confronting her son’s aggression and encouraged other parents to remain alert to their children’s activities. “Her decisive action is commendable, and we urge all parents to be vigilant and report any unusual or threatening behavior to law enforcement immediately,” CP Bakori stated.

Community Alert and Contact Information

The Kano State Police Command continues to emphasize the importance of community vigilance in maintaining public safety. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities without delay. The Command can be reached at the following emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.

Context and Broader Implications

This case highlights the growing concerns over illegal firearm possession and domestic violence in urban areas of Nigeria. Recent statistics from the Nigerian Police Force indicate a 15% increase in firearm-related domestic incidents in Kano State over the past year, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and proactive intervention by families and authorities alike.

Similar cases in other regions have shown that early detection and community cooperation with law enforcement can significantly reduce the risk of escalation. For instance, in Lagos State, a community-led initiative involving neighborhood watch groups has successfully lowered firearm-related domestic violence by 20% in the last two years.

Oyo at 50: Alageere Congratulates Makinde, Commends His Inclusive Governance

Oyo State Marks 50 Years: Alageere Applauds Governor Makinde’s Inclusive Leadership

As Oyo State commemorates its 50th anniversary, the Alageere of Ago-Are, Oba Azeez Uthman Oyetunde Odunaye II, JP, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor Seyi Makinde. He praised the governor’s administration for its inclusive governance and dedication to the welfare of all citizens.

Reflecting on Five Decades of Progress and Unity

In a statement released on Wednesday, the traditional ruler emphasized that the golden jubilee is more than a milestone of existence; it symbolizes the state’s enduring spirit, unity among its people, and visionary leadership. He remarked, “Celebrating 50 years of Oyo State is a tribute to resilience and collective progress. Governor Makinde’s commitment to inclusive governance has been instrumental in driving development across the state.”

Grassroots Development as a Priority

Oba Odunaye II highlighted the tangible benefits communities like Ago-Are have experienced under the current administration. He noted that the government’s focus on grassroots initiatives has led to significant improvements in infrastructure, education, and social services, directly enhancing the quality of life for residents.

“The positive changes are visible at the community level, where investments in roads, schools, and welfare programs have brought real dividends to the people,” the monarch stated.

Peace and Stability Through Collaborative Governance

The monarch also commended the peaceful environment prevailing in Oyo State, attributing it to Governor Makinde’s consultative and inclusive approach to leadership. This atmosphere of harmony, he said, is crucial for sustained development and social cohesion.

Prayers and a Call for Continued Support

Oba Odunaye II concluded by praying for the governor’s continued wisdom, strength, and good health to steer Oyo State toward even greater achievements. He urged the people to maintain peace and actively support the government’s efforts to foster sustainable growth and prosperity.

“May Almighty God bless Governor Makinde with the fortitude to lead effectively, and may the citizens of Oyo State remain united in their support for the administration’s vision,” he added.

APC Congress: Screening Committee Disqualifies Youth Leader Aspirants, Others

Oyo APC Addresses Registration Challenges Amid Electronic Membership Drive

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has issued a heartfelt message to its vast membership base, acknowledging the difficulties some members have faced during the ongoing digital registration process. Party officials have assured that the technical problems encountered are being actively addressed by the appropriate teams to ensure swift resolution.

Technical Difficulties Impacting Membership Registration

Across the 33 local government areas in Oyo State, numerous party supporters-both longstanding and newly interested-have yet to complete their data registration due to persistent technical setbacks. This situation has sparked calls from various party leaders and members for an extension of the registration deadline to accommodate those affected.

Mandatory NIN and PVC for Accurate Membership Records

In a statement released on Wednesday by Olawale Sadare, the Publicity Secretary of Oyo APC, the party emphasized that requiring the National Identification Number (NIN) and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) for registration is a strategic move. This policy aims to ensure the party maintains a precise and dependable database of its members, aligning with international standards and facilitating effective planning.

Efforts to Overcome Registration Barriers

“We recognize the challenges some members face, including difficulties in capturing personal data electronically and the absence of NINs among willing registrants,” Sadare explained. “Our leadership is committed to resolving these issues promptly before the registration deadline this Saturday.”

Extension Requests and Urgency for Full Participation

The party has received numerous appeals from stakeholders across the state seeking an extension of the registration period. These requests have been forwarded to the APC National Secretariat, with hopes for a positive response soon. Meanwhile, all members are urged to intensify their efforts to complete registration, as the exercise is critical for the party’s readiness ahead of upcoming congresses and primaries.

Consequences of Non-Registration and Support Channels

Sadare warned that members who fail to register during this exercise risk losing their recognition within the party structure as preparations for the next general elections advance. He encouraged party faithful to promptly report any registration issues to the State Secretariat located at Oke-Ado to ensure timely intervention.

With over 1.5 million registered APC members nationwide as of early 2024, the Oyo chapter’s commitment to a comprehensive and accurate membership roll is vital for maintaining its competitive edge in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape.

Oyo State Launches Comprehensive Health and Religious Assessment for 2026 Hajj Pilgrims

The Oyo State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board has initiated a thorough medical and religious evaluation for residents preparing to undertake the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. This process aims to ensure that prospective pilgrims possess both the physical fitness and foundational Islamic knowledge necessary for the sacred journey.

Extensive Medical Evaluations Conducted

Qualified healthcare professionals from the Oyo State Hospitals Management Board are administering a series of health screenings. These include vital sign assessments such as blood pressure and pulse rate, tuberculosis tests, and comprehensive evaluations of liver, heart, and kidney functions. Additionally, screenings for hepatitis B and C are being performed to safeguard the wellbeing of all participants.

Religious Knowledge Assessment and Guidance

During sessions held at the Hajj Camp in Olodo, Ibadan, Sheikh Wahab Atere Hashim Olamide JP, Chairman of the Board, addressed the pilgrims, urging them to deepen their commitment to Islamic teachings and worship. He highlighted the importance of continuous learning, noting that initial interviews revealed gaps in some pilgrims’ understanding of Islam.

To bridge these gaps, the Board has committed to providing ongoing educational programs led by experienced Islamic scholars. These initiatives will focus on the correct performance of Hajj rituals as outlined in the Holy Quran, ensuring pilgrims are spiritually prepared for their journey.

Health and Spiritual Preparedness Emphasized

Sheikh Olamide also cautioned pilgrims to maintain healthy lifestyles and avoid behaviors that could jeopardize their physical condition during the pilgrimage. This holistic approach underscores the Board’s dedication to both the spiritual and physical readiness of the pilgrims.

Positive Feedback from Participants

Several pilgrims, including Mr. Fijabi Abass, Mr. Raheem Balogun, Mrs. Alabi Modinat, and Mrs. Muritala Monsurat, praised the program for its organization and educational value. Mrs. Monsurat shared that the officials conducted routine inquiries to assess participants’ basic religious knowledge, which she found insightful and beneficial.

Encouragement for a Mindful Pilgrimage

Dr. Ibrahim Adelani, a respected community figure, encouraged pilgrims to approach the Hajj with optimism and resilience. He emphasized that perseverance and a positive attitude are essential qualities for a fulfilling pilgrimage experience.

Upcoming Medical Screenings Across Oyo State

The medical assessments will continue throughout the week, extending to other zones within Oyo State on Wednesday and Thursday. This phased approach ensures that all intending pilgrims receive the necessary health evaluations before embarking on their spiritual journey.

Before you criticize Lagos, ask yourself, what is your own state doing? – reality TV star, Tacha, tackles critics of Lagos state

by hassan January 27, 2026
written by hassan

Reality TV Star Tacha Challenges Critics of Lagos State: A Call for Self-Reflection

Popular reality television personality Tacha Akide has recently addressed the ongoing criticism directed at Lagos State by many Nigerians. In a candid social media video, she urged critics to reconsider their stance by reflecting on the contributions of their own home states before condemning Lagos.

The Burden of Lagos: Nigeria’s Economic Powerhouse Under Pressure

Tacha highlighted the immense strain Lagos faces as it accommodates a massive influx of people from across Nigeria seeking better opportunities. With a population exceeding 20 million residents-entirely Nigerians-Lagos has become the epicenter of economic activity and urban life in the country. She emphasized that Lagos is not the root problem but rather a symptom of broader systemic issues affecting Nigeria’s states.

Why Are So Many Nigerians Flocking to Lagos?

According to Tacha, the migration to Lagos is largely driven by the lack of development and opportunities in other Nigerian states. She criticized many state governors for their inaction, pointing out that some have spent entire terms without creating jobs, improving infrastructure, or fostering economic growth. This neglect forces citizens to relocate to Lagos in search of livelihoods, nightlife, and a functioning economy.

“Before you criticize Lagos, ask yourself, what is your own state doing? Every day I hear people say Lagos is dirty, Lagos smells, Lagos is full of beggars-and I laugh because Lagos is not the problem here. Lagos is the symptom. We have 36 states in Nigeria, yet Lagos carries the weight of the entire country. If even 10 to 15 states were performing half as well as Lagos, the pressure on Lagos would ease significantly. But most states are dormant, and their leaders are not held accountable,” Tacha stated emphatically.

The Need for Balanced Development Across Nigeria

Her remarks underscore a critical issue: the uneven development across Nigeria’s states exacerbates urban congestion and socio-economic challenges in Lagos. Experts estimate that Lagos contributes over 30% of Nigeria’s GDP, yet the state struggles to provide adequate infrastructure and services for its swelling population. This imbalance calls for urgent reforms and investments in other regions to distribute opportunities more equitably.

Looking Ahead: Lessons from Other Megacities

Similar challenges are faced by megacities worldwide, such as Mumbai in India or São Paulo in Brazil, where rural-to-urban migration strains city resources. However, successful decentralization efforts in countries like China, where multiple urban centers have been developed, demonstrate that strategic regional growth can alleviate pressure on primary cities. Nigeria could benefit from adopting such models to foster sustainable development nationwide.

For a deeper understanding of her perspective, watch the video below where Tacha passionately addresses the issue:

Family left heartbroken after doctor euthanized man because he was diabetic and blind

Canadian Family Mourns After Assisted Death of Son with Diabetes and Blindness

A devastating loss has struck a Canadian family following the physician-assisted death of their 26-year-old son, Kiano Vafaeian, who lived with blindness and complications from type 1 diabetes. This tragedy unfolded three years after the family had previously intervened to prevent his euthanasia.

Family’s Previous Intervention and Ongoing Struggle

In 2022, Kiano’s mother, Margaret Marsilla, successfully halted his access to Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program. She emphasized that her son was not terminally ill but was managing chronic health issues, including blindness and mental health challenges. Marsilla expressed deep frustration and heartbreak over the eventual approval of assisted death for her son.

Family grieving after assisted death of diabetic and blind man

Legal Framework and Controversy Surrounding MAiD

On December 30, 2025, Vafaeian was granted access to physician-assisted suicide under Canadian legislation, which requires applicants to demonstrate an “intolerable” condition that cannot be alleviated under acceptable circumstances. This law, initially enacted in 2016 for terminally ill adults, was broadened in 2021 to include individuals with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and certain mental health disorders.

Margaret Marsilla shared her anguish on social media, recalling how four years earlier, intervention in Ontario had saved her son’s life by providing support rather than allowing him to end it. She condemned the decision to proceed with his assisted death, calling it “disgusting on every level.”

Kiano Vafaeian, blind and diabetic, approved for assisted death

Calls for Reform and Greater Support for Vulnerable Patients

Determined to advocate for change, Marsilla vowed to fight for families facing similar heartbreak. “No parent should have to bury their child because a system and a doctor chose death over care, help, or compassion,” she stated. Her plea highlights ongoing debates about the ethical boundaries of assisted dying, especially for those with disabilities and mental health conditions.

Recent statistics indicate that since the expansion of MAiD eligibility, the number of assisted deaths involving non-terminal conditions has increased by over 30%, sparking concern among disability rights groups and healthcare professionals. Advocates argue for enhanced mental health services and palliative care options to ensure vulnerable individuals receive comprehensive support before considering assisted death.
