Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position, paving the way for Assistant Inspector-General Olatunji Rilwan Disu to take over as the new head of the Nigeria Police Force.

The development follows confirmation that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation after he submitted a letter citing pressing family considerations. The outgoing IGP had previously seen his tenure extended to 2027.

In a statement, the President expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and his contributions to national security.

Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who now assumes office as Inspector-General of Police, brings over 30 years of experience in law enforcement. He has held various strategic commands, including key operational and administrative roles, and is widely known for his work in Lagos policing operations.

The leadership transition comes at a critical time as the police continue to address security challenges across the country, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and urban crime. Attention is now focused on Disu’s reform priorities, operational strategy, and efforts to strengthen public trust in the force.

Further details on the official handover process are expected from the Presidency and the Police Force Headquarters.
