Former member of the House of Representatives, Dachung Musa Bagos, has called on Nigerian youths to appreciate the sacrifices made by previous generations in the fight for democracy and nation-building, stressing that leadership comes with responsibility and service.
Speaking during activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration, Bagos said young people must gain a deeper understanding of the struggles that shaped the country’s democratic journey if they are to effectively take over the “baton of stewardship.”
According to him, the nation’s democratic progress was achieved through years of dedication, resilience and sacrifice by individuals who fought for justice, accountability and good governance.
Bagos noted that while youths remain a critical force in shaping Nigeria’s future, they must equip themselves with knowledge, values and a sense of purpose to sustain and strengthen democratic institutions.
He encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in civic and political processes, emphasizing that leadership should not be viewed merely as a position of authority but as an opportunity to serve the people and advance national development.
The former lawmaker also urged older generations to mentor and empower emerging leaders by sharing experiences and creating opportunities that would enable them to contribute meaningfully to society,Highlighting the significance of Democracy Day, Bagos said the occasion should inspire citizens to reflect on the nation’s democratic gains while remaining committed to addressing existing challenges through peaceful and constructive engagement.
He maintained that the future of Nigeria depends largely on the preparedness of its young population to embrace the responsibilities that come with leadership and nation-building.
Bagos concluded by encouraging youths across the country to uphold integrity, patriotism and accountability as they prepare to inherit the task of steering Nigeria toward greater progress and unity.
Bagos’ remarks underscored the need for intergenerational collaboration, with the former legislator insisting that understanding the past is essential to building a stronger democratic future for Nigeria.
