Defence Minister Christopher Musa Issues Strong Reprimand to Terrorism Sympathizers

During a formal engagement in Maiduguri on January 14, Defence Minister Christopher Musa delivered a firm admonition to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi and others he identified as supporters of terrorist and bandit groups. Musa cautioned against any form of direct or indirect assistance to these elements that jeopardize Nigeria’s security.

Rejecting Misguided Narratives on Terrorism and Banditry

The Minister emphasized that terrorism and banditry must not be misconstrued as manifestations of ethnic, regional, or religious solidarity. He underscored the dangers of framing violent criminals as “brothers” or integral parts of society, a narrative previously promoted by Sheikh Gumi, who referred to forest bandits in such terms.

“One who associates with thieves shares in their guilt,” Musa declared.

Musa clarified that compassion should never be confused with condoning violence. He warned that such rhetoric only serves to embolden criminal networks responsible for widespread devastation, displacement of thousands of families, and the loss of numerous innocent lives across Nigeria.

The Role of Words in Fueling Terrorism

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of terrorism, the Defence Minister pointed out that beyond arms and ammunition, terrorism also thrives on moral justification and verbal protection. He stressed that individuals who defend, excuse, or remain silent about these criminals contribute to the perpetuation of violence and bear accountability for its repercussions.

National Security Demands Clear Allegiances

Musa concluded by asserting that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry cannot succeed if public discourse blurs the lines between offenders and victims. He insisted that neutrality is not an option when it comes to safeguarding the nation’s security.

“The decision is straightforward: align yourself with the law and the country, or be counted among those who facilitate criminality,” he affirmed.

Recent data from security agencies indicate a persistent rise in banditry-related incidents, with over 1,200 attacks reported in the northern regions in the past year alone, underscoring the urgency of unified national resolve against these threats.
