Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has paid glowing tribute to his mentor and role model, Sir Gilbert Chagoury, as the industrialist marks his 80th birthday, describing his life as a powerful testament to vision, discipline, and unwavering belief in Nigeria.
In a heartfelt message shared to commemorate the milestone, Otedola praised Chagoury for building more than just businesses, crediting him with shaping landmarks, institutions, and ideas that will endure for generations. He noted that Chagoury’s legacy is deeply woven into Nigeria’s modern urban and economic landscape.
Otedola highlighted Banana Island as one of Chagoury’s boldest achievements, describing it as a transformative vision that redefined urban development in the country. He also pointed to Eko Atlantic, emphasizing that without the courage and persistence behind the project, large parts of Victoria Island and Ikoyi could have been severely threatened by Atlantic Ocean erosion.
Describing Eko Atlantic as the “ninth wonder of the modern world,” Otedola said the project represents foresight in action—protecting the present while securing the future—and reflects Chagoury’s belief that Nigeria deserves world-class infrastructure built with long-term thinking.
According to Otedola, Chagoury’s passion for Nigeria remains rare and deeply inspiring, noting that even after decades of achievement, his commitment to national progress has never wavered. He described this consistency of purpose as Chagoury’s greatest legacy.
As Sir Gilbert Chagoury turns 80, Otedola celebrated a life defined by impact, vision, and service, wishing him continued good health, strength, and fulfillment, alongside the satisfaction of seeing Nigeria rise on foundations he helped lay.
“The story of modern Nigeria is richer because you chose to believe, build, and stay committed,” Otedola concluded.
