On Monday, Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State officially inaugurated the new chairman and members of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) at the Executive Council Chambers in the Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan. During the ceremony, he emphasized the critical importance of their role in safeguarding democratic processes by acting with impartiality and integrity.
Following the administration of the oath of office and signing of the official register, Governor Makinde reminded the commission members to execute their duties with transparency and a strong sense of accountability, underscoring the need to fear God in their responsibilities.
Commitment to Conducting Local Government Elections Before 2027
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s plan to hold local government elections before his tenure concludes in 2027. He expressed confidence that the people of Oyo State will continue to support his leadership, as they prefer the current progressive governance over reverting to previous regimes.
He stated, “Your task as members of OYSIEC is delicate and vital. Although I nominated you, your appointments were confirmed by the House of Assembly, reflecting a collective trust. The essence of this commission is independence – you must embody that fully.”
Governor Makinde further highlighted, “Justice for the people of Oyo State depends on your commitment to transparency and reverence for the oath you have taken. We are prepared to conduct free and fair elections, including the upcoming local government polls, which are expected to coincide with the general elections.”
Ensuring Credible Elections to Foster Democratic Foundations
He urged the commission to instill confidence in the electorate by organizing elections that are open and credible. “Politics involves engagement and persuasion, but once elected, governance becomes a serious responsibility that shapes the lives and futures of our citizens. By facilitating transparent local government elections, you will lay a strong democratic foundation for Oyo State,” the governor added.
