Ogundoyin Urges Creation of a Unified National Peace Strategy to Combat Security Threats
Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, has emphasized the critical need for a well-structured national peace plan to tackle the escalating security crises across the country.
Addressing the 19th International Peace Conference at the University of Ibadan
Delivering his keynote as the Special Guest of Honour at the inauguration of the 19th International Conference of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, Ogundoyin highlighted the alarming rise in kidnappings, armed banditry, and ethnic conflicts that continue to destabilize various regions in Nigeria.
He stressed that sustainable development is unattainable without a foundation of peace, stating, “True peace encompasses more than just the absence of violence; it requires justice, fairness, and security for all citizens. Immediate and decisive action is imperative.”
Commending Regional Leadership and Advocating Inclusive Security Efforts
Ogundoyin praised Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his proactive role in hosting the Southwest Governors’ Forum in Ibadan, where security challenges were a primary focus. He underscored that national security concerns must rise above political, ethnic, and religious divides.
He called on traditional rulers, religious organizations, civil society groups, and all relevant stakeholders to collaborate in fostering peace and protecting communities from violence.
Appeal to President Tinubu for Enhanced Community-Centered Peacebuilding
On behalf of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, Ogundoyin appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt more comprehensive and community-driven strategies to restore peace amid the surge in insecurity.
“In light of the disturbing increase in kidnappings, banditry, and communal conflicts, it is crucial to establish a national framework that reinforces security systems, improves intelligence operations, and promotes cooperation between federal and state governments. We must unite under the President’s leadership to bring hope and stability back to affected areas.”
Collaborating with International and Local Peace Organizations
Ogundoyin acknowledged the vital contributions of global and regional bodies such as the United Nations, ECOWAS, and the African Union in peace promotion. He expressed optimism about potential partnerships between the Nigerian Legislature and the Society for Peace Studies and Practice to develop legislation that supports conflict resolution and national cohesion.
“As legislators, we are committed to enacting laws that underpin peace initiatives, which are essential for sustainable growth and unity across Nigeria,” he affirmed.
