The Republic of Congo has intensified its efforts to swiftly identify and manage any potential Ebola cases following a recent resurgence of the virus in the Kasai Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This central region of the DRC has reported a new outbreak, prompting immediate action from its neighbor.

Thanks to a rapid escalation of containment strategies in the DRC, the spread of Ebola has been significantly curtailed, with no new infections recorded for 18 consecutive days as of October 13, 2025. This progress underscores the importance of early intervention and coordinated response.

Border Vigilance and Community Awareness

“Given our extensive shared border exceeding 1,000 kilometers and the frequent movement of people across various checkpoints, we remain highly vulnerable to Ebola transmission,” explains Dr. Jean Claude Emeka, Director of Hygiene and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health. “Our past experiences with Ebola outbreaks highlight the critical need to sensitize personnel at all entry points.”

Recently, over 1,000 stakeholders-including port health officials-participated in comprehensive training sessions focused on outbreak preparedness. These sessions emphasized enhanced screening protocols, prompt identification of suspected cases, and proper case management to prevent virus spread.

Airport Operations and Early Detection

Christian Voumina, Operations Manager at Brazzaville’s primary international airport, stresses the importance of early action: “Prevention is paramount. We cannot afford to wait until the virus crosses our borders. As the main gateway for international travelers, it is vital that our staff are well-informed about Ebola and equipped to implement necessary precautions.”

With Ebola recognized as one of the deadliest infectious diseases, the airport has become a focal point for vigilance and rapid response.

Strengthening National Preparedness Frameworks

Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), Congo’s health authorities have conducted a thorough review of the existing national preparedness strategy. This has led to updates in the National Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan, ensuring it reflects current risks and best practices.

In addition, educational materials designed to raise public awareness about Ebola prevention and control have been widely disseminated to encourage community adherence to health guidelines.

Frontline Readiness and Public Engagement

Emma Gisèle Monka, a health officer stationed at Maya Maya International Airport, shares her frontline experience: “I am fully prepared. Distributing informational leaflets and applying the knowledge gained from training sessions allows me to confidently address inquiries about Ebola symptoms, transmission routes, and preventive measures.”

Enhanced Surveillance and Medical Infrastructure

To bolster clinical readiness, isolation units have been designated within two major public hospitals in Brazzaville. Additionally, an ambulance is now permanently stationed at the city’s main airport to facilitate rapid transport of suspected cases.

The current initiatives represent a strategic shift from responding after outbreaks occur to establishing a robust, anticipatory health system. Dr. Vincent Sodjinou, WHO Representative in the Republic of Congo, affirms the organization’s commitment: “We collaborate closely with the government to enhance detection at border points and ensure swift action if cases arise. Our support extends beyond Ebola, encompassing a holistic approach to epidemic preparedness that includes strengthening health infrastructure, ongoing workforce development, multisectoral coordination, and comprehensive contingency planning.”
