President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate release of the payment of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and lecturers who refused to join the government’s Independent Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS), OYOGist.com has gathered.
The IPPIS is an ICT tool that enables the government to keep track of payment of employees on its payroll, and has most of the Federal Civil Servants enrolled in it.
However, the Federal Government and the leaders of ASUU have been at loggerheads over the latter’s refusal to enroll its members in the system, forcing the government to withold payment of their salary since February.
The President, however, issued a directive to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed to immediately release the withheld salaries.
The government ordered the release of the payment to the lecturers and other ASUU members to enable them to cope with the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
