The Senate has approved the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) 2026 budget proposal, endorsing a revenue target of ₦11.074 trillion and an expenditure estimate of ₦1.295 trillion for the next fiscal year.

The approval followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs, chaired by Senator Isah Jibrin. The committee reviewed the agency’s 2025 budget performance before recommending the adoption of its 2026 projections.

According to the committee, the Customs Service exceeded its 2025 revenue target by generating approximately ₦7.2 trillion, surpassing the approved target of ₦6.5 trillion. Lawmakers attributed the strong performance to improved revenue collection measures despite challenges such as government fiscal policies aimed at boosting local production and disruptions in global trade.

For 2026, the Customs Service plans to achieve its ambitious revenue target through the wider deployment of technology, enhanced revenue recovery systems, real-time audits, and improved trade facilitation initiatives.

The approved expenditure of ₦1.295 trillion includes ₦421 billion for personnel costs, ₦307 billion for overhead expenses, and ₦565 billion for capital projects. Key capital investments will focus on completing the Nigeria Customs Service headquarters and other ongoing infrastructure projects.

During deliberations, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended the Customs Service for its impressive revenue performance and prudent management of public funds. He praised the agency for exceeding its revenue target while maintaining a disciplined spending pattern, describing its officers as patriotic and committed to national development.

Following unanimous approval by lawmakers, Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated the Nigeria Customs Service and commended the Senate committee for its thorough review of the budget proposal.

The approved revenue target underscores the Federal Government’s continued drive to strengthen non-oil revenue generation and improve fiscal sustainability through enhanced customs administration.
