Panic and chaos gripped the Alakija neighborhood in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State on Thursday morning following the sudden collapse of a three-storey building. An unknown number of individuals are feared trapped beneath the debris.
The incident occurred abruptly around 11:40 a.m., catching residents, local traders, and passersby completely off guard. According to eyewitnesses, the structure gave way without any prior warning signs. The thunderous collapse sent shockwaves through the immediate vicinity, forcing occupants of neighboring buildings to flee into the streets out of fear of secondary structural failures.
While the exact number of casualties or individuals trapped inside remains unconfirmed, emergency frontline workers were quickly deployed to the scene.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), officially confirmed the disaster and assured the public that a coordinated rescue operation is actively in progress. LASEMA officials, alongside other emergency responders, are currently combing through the rubble in a race against time to locate and extract survivors.
The root cause of the structural failure has not yet been determined. Meanwhile, tense crowds of local residents have gathered near the perimeter, anxiously waiting for updates as rescue teams work to clear the heavy debris.
