Why Investors Are Preferring to Lend to Nigeria Instead of Investing Under Tinubu’s Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith in democracy, emphasizing that the country’s progress depends on unity, resilience, and active citizen participation.

In his nationwide address marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the president paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, describing them as patriots who sacrificed greatly to secure the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

“Today, we honour the resilience of Nigerians who refused to surrender their faith in freedom and the courage of those who stood firm against intimidation,” Tinubu said, acknowledging the contributions of activists, journalists, labour leaders, students, professionals, and political figures who fought for democratic rule.

The president used the occasion to defend his administration’s policies and reforms, insisting that difficult decisions taken since assuming office were aimed at securing a more prosperous future for the country.

Tinubu highlighted efforts to strengthen the nation’s economy through fiscal reforms, infrastructure development, and initiatives designed to improve investor confidence and create opportunities for economic growth.

Addressing security concerns, he noted that the government had intensified efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities threatening national stability. According to him, thousands of security personnel have been recruited while additional resources have been committed to improving the country’s security architecture.

The president also expressed concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states, describing the incidents as painful reminders of the work still required to guarantee the safety of all Nigerians.

“Though this year’s mood is dampened by the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno, we remain hopeful for their safe return,” he stated, assuring citizens that the government would continue pursuing measures to strengthen national security.

Tinubu urged Nigerian youths not to abandon the country despite prevailing difficulties, encouraging them instead to contribute their talents and energy toward building a stronger nation.

He further stressed the importance of protecting democratic institutions, insisting that democracy, despite its imperfections, remains the most effective system for promoting accountability, inclusion, and national development.

As Nigeria commemorates another year of uninterrupted democratic governance, the president called on citizens to renew their commitment to justice, peace, and national unity.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the June 12 heroes and work collectively toward creating a country where freedom, opportunity, and prosperity are accessible to all.

The 2026 Democracy Day celebration marks another milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, serving as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress while confronting the challenges that still lie ahead.

President Tinubu said Nigerians must continue to defend democracy while acknowledging ongoing security and economic challenges facing the country. He also honoured those who fought for democratic rule and appealed for national unity and hope.
