Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has outlined an ambitious economic recovery and security agenda after being cleared by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Screening Panel ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku appeared before the screening committee in Abuja as part of the party’s nomination process, where he presented his credentials and shared what he described as a practical roadmap for tackling Nigeria’s deepening economic hardship and worsening insecurity,Speaking after the exercise, the former vice president expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the screening, describing the process as smooth and productive.

In a statement released by his media team, Atiku said Nigeria could no longer continue on its current path of economic uncertainty, rising unemployment, and declining investor confidence. According to him, the country requires experienced leadership capable of implementing difficult but necessary reforms.

He explained that his economic blueprint would focus on job creation, private sector expansion, fiscal discipline, and stable macroeconomic policies aimed at restoring confidence in the nation’s economy.

“The country needs policies that encourage investment, stimulate growth, and create opportunities for millions of Nigerians struggling under the weight of economic hardship,” he stated.

On security, Atiku expressed concern over the persistent wave of kidnappings, banditry, insurgency, and violent attacks across various parts of the country. He argued that no responsible government should allow citizens to live in constant fear.

He disclosed that his proposed security strategy would prioritise intelligence-driven operations, stronger collaboration among security agencies, decentralised security structures, and decisive leadership in confronting criminal elements.

“At this defining moment in our national life, Nigeria does not need experiments. It needs tested leadership, clarity of vision, and the courage to make difficult but necessary decisions in the national interest,” Atiku said.

The former vice president reaffirmed his commitment to building what he described as a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria where citizens can pursue their aspirations without fear or deprivation.

His clearance by the ADC screening panel represents another significant step in his quest for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections. The development comes amid increasing political realignments as opposition figures seek to strengthen their platforms before the next electoral cycle.

Political analysts say Atiku’s emphasis on economic revival and improved security reflects the growing concerns of Nigerians, many of whom continue to grapple with rising living costs and persistent insecurity.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the contest within the ADC is expected to draw considerable national attention, with aspirants seeking to convince party members and the electorate that they possess the solutions needed to move the country forward.

Atiku said his economic plan would centre on job creation, private sector growth, fiscal discipline and restoring investor confidence, while his security strategy would focus on intelligence-led operations and stronger inter-agency cooperation.
