U.S. Warns Oman Over Possible Iran Strait of Hormuz Cooperation

The United States Department of the Treasury has reportedly warned Oman about potential sanctions if Muscat assists Iranian activities tied to toll collection or operational coordination in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating financial pressure connected to one of the world’s most strategically sensitive waterways.

Oman has traditionally maintained a delicate balancing role in Middle Eastern diplomacy, often serving as a quiet mediator between regional rivals and Western powers. The warning suggests Washington is becoming increasingly determined to restrict any economic or logistical mechanisms that could strengthen Iran’s position in Gulf maritime affairs.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a central artery for global oil transportation, making any disputes involving control, access, or security within the passage internationally significant. U.S. officials fear that financial arrangements linked to Iranian maritime activities could undermine sanctions enforcement and provide Tehran with additional leverage during ongoing regional tensions.

Analysts say the warning also places Oman in a difficult diplomatic position. Maintaining neutrality has historically been central to Muscat’s foreign policy strategy, but rising confrontation between Washington and Tehran may increasingly force regional states to navigate difficult geopolitical choices.
