A teacher in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is currently standing trial over allegations of sexual assault involving a three-year-old pupil in a case that has generated public debate and legal scrutiny.

Background of the Case

The matter reportedly began in October 2021 after a parent raised concerns about possible abuse involving her daughter. The child was later taken to a hospital where medical personnel documented an injury.

Initial statements allegedly mentioned another pupil. However, following police investigations, authorities concluded that the child named was unlikely to have been responsible.

Arrests and Investigations

Police subsequently arrested the class teacher and headmaster on allegations of negligence. They were later granted bail.

Over time, different individuals were reportedly mentioned during the course of the investigation, including school staff and other persons connected to the school. However, several of those individuals were later discharged after investigations found no evidence linking them directly to the alleged incident.

A later forensic interview reportedly led investigators to focus on the class teacher.

Legal Proceedings

The case proceeded to court, where the teacher has remained on trial. She has denied all allegations.

At one stage, she was reportedly detained over claims of failing to appear in court but was later released on bail.

The matter is still before the court, and no final judgment has been delivered.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 12.

As with all ongoing criminal cases, the accused remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
