Governor Seyi Makinde Affirms Commitment to Inclusive Development Amid Circular Road Project

Engagement with Affected Communities to Begin This Week

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to fostering development that is equitable, compassionate, and inclusive. He announced plans to personally meet with residents impacted by the ongoing 110-kilometer Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road Project, starting Wednesday.

In alignment with his pledge to lead a people-focused government, Governor Makinde emphasized his intention to visit the project site, hear directly from the affected communities, and consider all options, including fair compensation and resettlement arrangements.

Addressing Controversies and Historical Context

While presenting the 2026 Budget Proposal to the Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday, Makinde acknowledged the challenges of leadership, including facing criticism and hostility. He stated that such reactions were anticipated and part of the responsibilities of governance.

Importantly, the governor clarified that his administration did not initiate any land acquisition for the Circular Road Project. He revealed that documents from the previous administration showed that land acquisition-specifically 500 meters on both sides of the road-was completed and publicly announced in a November 2018 edition of a national newspaper, predating his tenure.

The Circular Road: A Catalyst for Growth and Equity

Governor Makinde underscored the project’s significance beyond mere infrastructure, framing it as a vehicle for equitable development, economic growth, and shared prosperity across Oyo State. He cautioned political actors attempting to exploit the controversy for personal gain, asserting that the electorate is discerning and will not be swayed by divisive tactics.

“When I assumed office, I anticipated challenges like these. I did not seek this position for personal gain but to serve Oyo State,” Makinde remarked. “Our progress must prioritize the people, and I remain steadfast in ensuring development is just, humane, and inclusive.”

Upcoming Community Visits and Future Leadership Transition

The governor confirmed his visit to Ologuneru on Wednesday to engage with residents directly. He also reflected on the political future, noting that his tenure will conclude in 2027 and that preparations for a smooth transition are underway. Makinde encouraged citizens to look beyond political posturing, emphasizing that the people of Oyo State will ultimately decide their leaders.

Building Institutional Strength and Economic Resilience

Beyond infrastructure, Makinde highlighted his administration’s focus on establishing strong institutions rather than relying on individual personalities. He cited the creation of bodies such as the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) and the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority as examples of this approach.

“Our governance model is system-based, not personality-driven. We are committed to strengthening the civil service, digitizing government operations, and embedding transparency as a core leadership value,” he explained.

The governor also stressed the importance of economic diversification, pointing to the need for industrial development and commercial exploration of solid minerals within the state. He noted that while federal allocations have increased, true progress comes from productivity and self-sufficiency.

Vision for a Prosperous Oyo State

Makinde expressed confidence in Oyo State’s potential to transition from a consumption-driven economy to a productive powerhouse, setting an example for other regions. He praised the resilience and trust of the people over his six years in office and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued growth, innovation, and shared prosperity.

“We have not failed you, and we will not fail you now. Together, we will build a future marked by progress and opportunity for all,” he concluded.
