According to reports reaching OYOGist.com the Nigerian Senate has directed its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to conduct a probe into the alleged invasion of rice shops at Bodija market, Ibadan by some men of the Nigeria Customs.

The probe comes after a petition by the Ibadan Foodstuff Sellers Association that was addressed to the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan was brought to the floor by Senator Kola Balogun who represents Oyo South Senatorial District.

The alleged raid that was carried out in late March and early April this year resulted in the seizure of goods reportedly worth N86 million. According to the petition, 3,046 bags rice worth N79,196,000; 14 kegs of 25kg vegetable oil; unnumbered bags of 15kg garri, and N4,862,000 in cash were seized in the raid.

The association alleged that the traders were now present at their various shops when the raid took place. To add insult to injury, the association also claimed in their petition that they have been ordered by the Nigeria Customs not to reopen their stalls, which has inflicted untold hardship on the traders and their family members.

The association is now demanding that the Nigeria Senate compel the Nigeria Customs to return all the seized goods carried from their shops to them and warn them against carrying out a repeat of such.
