The African Union (AU) has obtained 270 million vaccines against Covid-19 for the continent as per a press release issued on Wednesday evening by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who also is the 15 nation bloc’s current head, “We have gone a step further to get vaccines independently using our own limited resources.”
The vaccines, of which a minimum of 50 million are going to be available between April and June, and are going to be supplied by the laboratories Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca whose production is in India, and Johnson & Johnson.
Agreements to assist African countries finance the acquisition of those vaccines are reached with the pan-African Afreximbank (Africa Export-Import Bank) and therefore the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development .
