President Muhammadu Buhari has shown his concern over the vehicle accident that occurred in Mgbowu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, which claimed more than 20 lives, most of them school pupils.
The President made this known in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, today. Buhari condoled with families and relatives of the victims.
He prayed that God would grant them succour and spare the country of such tragedy in future.
The president further symphatized with the Catholic Church of Awgu, which runs Presentation Nursery and Primary School that the pupils attended, and the Enugu State government.
The president taxed road users to adhere strictly to guidelines, as initial reports attributed the accident to brake failure by the truck involved.
Oyogist.com learnt that 21 persons, including pupils of the school owned by the Catholic Diocese of Awgu, died following the road crash on Wednesday.
The Enugu Sector Commander, Mr Ogbonna Kalu, while Confirming the incident revealed that the accident occurred early Wednesday.
He, however, blamed the accident on speeding beyond the limit and dangerous driving.
Kalu said, “21 persons have been confirmed dead and more than 50 persons were in the school bus.
“Also of note is that not all the deaths were school children. Those working on the roadside were part of the casualties.
“From available information, the accident was caused by dangerous driving.”
