The former US Secretary of State under the President Barak Obama administration, Hilary Clinton, has called on Muhammadu Buhari to stop the killing of unarmed protesters, OYOGist.com reports.
“I’m calling on Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Army to stop killing young #EndSARS protesters. #StopNigeriaGovernment,” Mrs Clinton tweeted on Tuesday night following shootings at Lekki Toll Gate.
The shooting has allegedly claimed 78 lives, according to several reports from within the country.
Nigerian youths are protesting for the abolishment of a notorious Special Anti-Robery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigerian Police Force known for widespread cases of extrajudicial killing, abduction, rape, and extortion.
The government announced the scrapping of the unit, but quickly announced the formation of another called Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), but Nigerians think it’s merely a dress up.
The protests have continued, and have grown to include broader requests, including a request for the resignation of the police boss, Mohammad Adamu, a better wage for police among other requests.
