India’s coronavirus infections passed six million as the outbreak continues to surge throughout the world’s second most populous nation.
The health ministry in Delhi confirmed 82,170 cases over the past 24 hours, carrying the country past the latest grim benchmark. India has swept from five to six million cases in just 12 days, with only the United States and its 7.1 million caseload faring worse. At present rates, India is set to overtake America as the worst-hit nation within days.
More than 1,000 new deaths bring India ever closer to 100,000 fatalities from Covid-19, although the true scale of the outbreak is feared to be much higher, as India’s testing regime still lags far behind other world powers.
