OYOGist.com has learned that Philip Nwansi, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Imo state, who spoke to the gentlemen of the press in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Thursday the 3rd of September, has reportedly said that the government of Imo state have done nothing in settling the Arrears of salaries, even after Meeting with the Governor of the state on several occasions.
According to the chairman of NUT, the NUT and Governor Hope Uzodimma had met some months ago and the Governnor promised to clear the arrears of salaries owed to teachers in the state, but to now, being the first week of September, nothing is done, and salaries of over 2000 teachers in imo are yet to be paid for over 6 months now.
He made reference to Ngor Okpala LGA, no primary school teacher has received salary since March this year. In Owerri West and other LGAs also, many teachers are yet to receive their salaries, but the Governnor promised to seek to it that salaries are paid.
“In view of this, Teachers in Imo State have vowed not to reopen schools in Imo state until their accumulated salary arrears owed them by the state have been paid, there is no way you can tell me that what is holding their salaries is BVN and the banks. We cannot believe that. You cannot tell me that the papers of all the teachers in Ngor Okpala are all wrong, before schools reopen in Imo state, all the outstanding salaries and arrears will be paid”, He added.
