Despite Signing Kai Havertz, Chelsea Still Yet to Break The Club Transfer Record

According to reports, Chelsea would not be breaking their transfer record to sign Kai Havertz this summer.

The most expensive player in Chelsea history is goalkeeper Kepa Arrizibalaga, who was acquired from Athletic Bilbao for £72million fee, which is also the world record for goalkeepers.

It had long been thought that Chelsea would have to smash that record to sign Havertz, but apparently the Blues will not pay more that £72million, even with add-ons.

An initial payment of £62million is now widely expected to be announced.

This shocking reduction in price goes to emphasize the ingenuity of Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia. The Russian has done fantastic pieces of business this summer, landing world class players like Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner for a combined fee not more that £85million.

She was also able to negotiate a £50million move for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, despite the Foxes initially demanding £80million. What’s more, she was able to snag a veteran world class defender like Thiago Silva, as well as highly rated youngsters Xavier Mbuyamba and Malang Sarr, all for free.

And now, getting Havertz for an initial fee of just £62million would prove to be the biggest masterstroke of them all.
