Mali Coup: ECOWAS Vows To Punish Coup Leaders

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Tuesday disclosed its displeasure with the Military coup in Mali. In a press release furnished to the public in French but translated by IPoliticus the bloc announced its suspension of Mali from all its decision making organs and ask the Soldiers to release the elected president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and the prime minister Boubou Cisse, oyogist.com reports.

Furthermore, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it has closed both land and air borders of its member states’ with Mali and suspended all economic activities between its 14 other member states and the landlocked country.

To further showcase its annoyance, the bloc vowed to demand sanctions against the coup leaders, their partners and collaborators.

Recall, on 18 August 2020, elements of the Malian Armed Forces began a mutiny.Soldiers on pick-up trucks stormed the Soundiata military base in the town of Kati, where gunfire was exchanged before weapons were distributed from the armory and senior officers arrested. Tanks and armoured vehicles were seen on the town’s streets,as well as military trucks heading for the capital, Bamako.

The soldiers detained several government officials including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta who later the same day resigned and dissolved the government.This is the country’s second coup attempt in less than 10 years.
