Manchester United should not regret selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan last summer, says Tony Cascarino, who believes the Red Devils ‘can challenge for the Premier League title’ with Anthony Martial leading the line.
Questions have been asked of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking options after United’s wasteful performance as they were knocked out of the Europa league last weekend.
Martial has come under particular scrutiny for missing a number of great goalscoring chances in that game, and for his overall lack of ruthlessness, with United being urged by many to spend big on a striker this summer.
Jamie O’Hara said on Tuesday that United need a striker in the mould of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, or even their former player Lukaku.
The ex-Red Devil showed his old side exactly what they were missing on Monday, as he scored two goals in Inter Milan’s 5-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk to book their place in this week’s Europa League final, with O’Hara saying united shouldn’t have sold lukaku.
But Cascarino disagrees, insisting Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are all good enough to bring titles back to Old Trafford.
Tony Cascarino said: “If you’d asked me a year or 18 months ago if Martial was the man to lead the line for United, I’d have said ‘absolutely not’
“But he’s twice the player he was then, I think all Man United fans will recognise that.
“Obviously Lukaku is doing what he’s doing, but he didn’t win the league with Inter this season, Juve won it.
“I used to think he was a bit one-dimensional, but he leads the line brilliantly and also has a turn of pace and an intelligence about his game that has definitely improved.
“But, I think it’s a very big ask to say, ‘he’d be the solution for Man United’.
“I think United could add another striker to put more pressure on the shirt, but the numbers tell you they can challenge for the Premier League title with their current forward threat.”
