There was palpable tension in Bunu community, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday, 8 August, 2020, as suspected gunmen stormed the community shooting indiscriminately with many suspected to have been killed and their corpses taken away, oyogist.com reports.
The youth leader of the community, Justin Wabah, in his statement said that the assailants also destroyed property in the community, attributing the surprise attack to inadequate policing of the area.
He said the villagers became apprehensive following the careless shootings in the community as some residents blindly ran into the bushes for cover and sustained injuries in the process.
Wabah, who condemned the killings and destruction of property, called on the state police command to beef up security in the community to avert a repeat of the incident.
He said, “Early hours of today, around 2am, there were several gunshots in our community and opposite Bunu-Taagu Road by Shongai, we discovered a pool of blood by the side of the road, where a motorcycle was burnt. The quantity of blood in that place shows that many persons might have been killed and their corpses taken away. We searched around the bushes but could not find any bodies.”
“Some of our community people ran into the bush in darkness and sustained injuries. They are receiving treatments. The problem we are having is much; killing everywhere. We need a security patrol. The police station in charge of this area does not have a patrol vehicle. The one they had, got damaged in an accident,” he said.
